Variety reports that “Chicago” director Rob Marshall, may be directing the next “Pirates of the Caribbean” film. If Marshalll is a lock [to direct], production will begin in 2010. This would be the fourth film in the Disney franchise. I really like Rob Marshall’s work, but I don’t know how I feel about another Pirates sequel. I think they should’ve just left it at the first film, but considering how well the first film did, of course Disney would want to cash in on the sequel train. According to the numbers, numbers most certainly speak louder than words. The Pirates trilogy has grossed $2.6 billion dollars (no that is not a typo) worldwide with Gore Verbinski directing all three films.
Perhaps a new director can be a good thing for the franchise. To be honest, I wasn’t a fan of the last two Pirates sequels. A new director can bring a new and fresh vision. The good news is that Johnny Depp will be back to play Captain Jack Sparrow, the role that garnered him an Academy Award nomination.
