It’s official! James Cameron’s Avatar has surpassed Titanic in the Worldwide Box Office. According to Comingsoon.net, Avatar still trails Titanic in the gross domestic box office numbers however there’s still time for Avatar to catch up and/or surpass Titanic.
Thoughts?
**UPDATE 2/3/10: “Avatar” has officially passed “Titanic” in the Domestic Box Office. Read more here.**

The Golden Globe Awards has in the past been very favorable to freshman nominees. The 67th Golden Globe Awards was no different. Also it was a night of shameless promotion, but what was funny is that the stars didn’t hide nor deny that they were shamelessly promoting their upcoming projects. Freshman drama “Glee” took home the Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Comedy, and James Cameron won for Best Director for “Avatar” which certainly gave an indication to which film was going to win Best Picture.

The 2009 Golden Globe Nominations were revealed today, December 15, 2009, and the awards ceremony will air on January 17, 2010 and will be hosted by Golden Globe winner Ricky Gervais. There are a few freshman nominees which is very exciting and familiar nominees. Starting off with the Movie nominations. Avatar will be released in theaters on December 18, 2009, and if it didn’t look amazing enough – I’m sure a Golden Globe nomination for Best Drama would not hurt to boost some box office numbers. Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon were nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor for Invictus. They were truly the shining stars in that film, so the nominations are much deserved. Matt Damon is also nominated for Best Actor in a Comedy for The Informant!. Between Invictus and The Informant!, I think I enjoyed Damon’s performance in The Informant! more. A huge thumbs up from me for Sandra Bullock for being a dual nominee for Best Actress in a Drama for The Blind Side and Best Actress in a Comedy for The Proposal. Also special kudos to (500) Days of Summer for getting a Best Picture – Comedy nomination.
On to the Television nominations. Fox’s freshman hit Glee has four nominations including Best Television Series (Musical or Comedy). Not too shabby for its first year out of the gates. ABC’s freshman comedy Modern Family was also nominated for Best Television Series (Musical or Comedy). The question is, can a freshman comedy beat 30 Rock which won the Golden Globe for Best Television Series (Musical or Comedy) last year? In terms of Television Nomination snubs, I am surprised that there wasn’t any Grey’s Anatomy love. I would’ve thought that Chandra Wilson and/or Sandra Oh would’ve received an acting nomination.

In the past, there have been many December blockbuster hits including the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. This December seems to be the month of potential blockbuster hits with Academy Award winning directors behind them. Plenty of promotion has gone into James Cameron’s latest film “Avatar” which is an action/fantasy film starring Sam Worthington (“Terminator Salvation”). Clint Eastwood’s latest film “Invictus” has some Oscar buzz to it and it stars Matt Damon and Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman. Peter Jackson directs the screen adaptation of “The Lovely Bones” which has also garnered some Oscar buzz and it is definitely one of my top picks to see this December.
Rob Marshall (“Chicago”) brings “Nine” from stage to screen with an all-star cast including Academy Award Winners Marion Cotillard, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Academy Award nominee Kate Hudson. Another film that has Oscar buzz surrounding it is “Up in the Air” starring Academy Award Winner George Clooney. Before Robert Downey Jr. reprises his Iron Man role this summer, he first tackles on the role of “Sherlock Holmes”, which looks fun and action packed. Robert De Niro, Drew Barrymore, Sam Rockwell, and Kate Beckinsale star in “Everybody’s Fine” which is probably the only film that takes place during the Holiday season. In terms of family films, there’s “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel”.
My spotlight picks of the month are “The Last Station” and “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”. “The Last Station” is a historical drama based on author Leo Tolstoy’s life and the cast is top notch. The film stars Christopher Plummer (“The Sound of Music”), James McAvoy (“Atonement”), and Academy Award winner Helen Mirren (“The Queen”). “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” is Heath Ledger’s (“The Dark Knight”) final film and looks to be quite a show. Well that’s my December overview, click on the link below to check out the rest of the movies coming out in the next month.
