“Futurama” is back!

Following in the footsteps of the “Family Guy”, “Futurama” is coming back to network television with all-new episodes next year due to the success of its reruns and DVD sales. “Futurama” was created by Matt Groening (“The Simpsons”) and it originally aired from 1999-2003. It makes you wonder with all of the canceled shows in the last few years, is it possible to bring them back with loyal off-air fandom? In retrospect it is probably easier to get back or replace the voice talent on an animated series as opposed to casting a new cast (or attempting to reunite an original cast) for a live show but with enough support – anything can be possible. Some of the shows canceled this year include: “Pushing Daisies”, “Dirty Sexy Money”, “Eli Stone”, and “Kyle XY”.

This year ABC attempted to bring back “Cupid” starring Bobby Cannavale (“Will & Grace”), but alas the show has been canceled yet again. The original series premiered in 1998, and starred Jeremy Piven (“Entourage”). Sometimes relaunches work (i.e. CW’s 90210) and some don’t. Sometimes good casting and writing can’t help propel a show alone. It’s a ratings competition and sadly a lot of good shows seem to be yanked off the air before they are given a proper shot. A good example would be the show “Wonderfalls” (2004). That show had so much potential and it was taken off the air after showing only 4 episodes. Fortunately, 20th Century Fox released the DVD set with all 13 episodes both aired and unaired which had closure to the series. Lee Pace from “Pushing Daisies” was part of the original cast of “Wonderfalls”. I would highly recommend watching “Wonderfalls” on DVD if you haven’t seen it. It is witty, funny, and quite charming!

Kudos to “Futurama” for beating the the odds! Hopefully more shows can make a comeback as well!
