Variety reports that “Chicago” director Rob Marshall, may be directing the next “Pirates of the Caribbean” film. If Marshalll is a lock [to direct], production will begin in 2010. This would be the fourth film in the Disney franchise. I really like Rob Marshall’s work, but I don’t know how I feel about another Pirates sequel. I think they should’ve just left it at the first film, but considering how well the first film did, of course Disney would want to cash in on the sequel train. According to the numbers, numbers most certainly speak louder than words. The Pirates trilogy has grossed $2.6 billion dollars (no that is not a typo) worldwide with Gore Verbinski directing all three films.
Perhaps a new director can be a good thing for the franchise. To be honest, I wasn’t a fan of the last two Pirates sequels. A new director can bring a new and fresh vision. The good news is that Johnny Depp will be back to play Captain Jack Sparrow, the role that garnered him an Academy Award nomination.
ABC has begun collecting feedback from focus groups in order to determine Betty’s “new” look for the upcoming season of “Ugly Betty”. This would be the show’s 4th season, so I do believe it is time to transform Betty’s “look”. Besides, four years is a long time to be wearing braces. They have to come off eventually. In the original series “Betty la fea”, Betty eventually gets a makeover. Of course we wouldn’t want Betty all glammed up right away. It would take away the charm of what “Ugly Betty” is. It has to be gradual, like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly – it takes time.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Silvio Horta talked about Betty’s “transformation”. This what he said on the subject: “There’s going to be a progression in her look overall,” he said. “It’ll still be Betty, but you’ll see some growth in that direction.”
I’m looking forward to the upcoming season of “Ugly Betty”. I admit I have a lot of catching up to do as I missed most of Season 3, but I’ll watch the reruns on line soon enough. 🙂
According to the Ausiello Files, the Fox Network might be planning a crossover event between “Bones” and “Lie to Me”. I think this is a clever idea. “Bones” will be heading into its 5th season while “Lie to Me” will start its 2nd season this Fall. What a great way to add ratings to both shows!
If you could concoct a crossover event (with Fox shows), what would it be? I think it would be interesting to work in “American Idol” with “Glee”. In Season 3 of “Bones”, former Idol contestant Ace Young, had a guest spot on the show. The episode title was “The Wannabe in the Weeds”, where Young played an aspiring singer. It was “American Idol” meets “Bones”, a pseudo crossover event if you will. At the end of the episode, Emily Deschanel who plays Dr. Temperance Brennan on “Bones”, sings “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper.

According to Comingsoon.net via Access Hollywood, Rachelle Lefevre was “stunned” to hear that she was being replaced by Bryce Dallas Howard in the role of Victoria for the third installment in the “Twilight” series, “Eclipse”. The announcement of Howard taking over the role came yesterday (July 28, 2009) after Summit Entertainment stated that Lefevre had scheduling conflicts that prevented her from filming the third movie.
**UPDATE: Rachelle Lefevre speaks up about “Twilight” recast. Read about it here.**
Bryce Dallas Howard (“Terminator Salvation”) has joined the cast of “Eclipse” which is part of the Twilight Saga movies based on the books by Stephenie Meyer. Howard will be replacing Rachelle Lefevre in the role of Victoria. “Eclipse” is scheduled for release on June 30, 2010. Interesting news indeed. Any thoughts?

Can you believe that “Smallville” is heading into its 9th season? I’ve watched “Smallville” from the beginning and in my opinion, Season 8 was the best season ever and the finale was certainly a cliffhanger. A sneak peek of Season 9 premiered at Comic-Con and I am definitely looking forward to the premiere. Some of the footage includes our first look at Zod played by Callum Blue (“The Tudors”) and Metallo played by Brian Austin Green (“Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles”).
According to TV by the Numbers, the Season 9 premiere of “Smallville” is set for September 25, 2009. Mark your calendars! 🙂
According to Variety, Fox has pushed up the premieres for both “Glee” and “So You Think You Can Dance” to September 9, 2009. I think this is a smart move. This way “Glee” has a chance to establish itself on the prime time schedule (before the slew of season and series premieres start) and gain an audience. I know I am looking forward to “Glee” so I hope the show is as good as the preview episode that aired in May. 🙂

**UPDATE: It was announced during ABC’s “After the Final Rose” Special that Jillian and Ed plan to get married in a year.”
According to TV by the Numbers, TV viewers wanted to know who Jillian chose on last night’s finale of “The Bachelorette” as it garnered the highest ratings of the night. I must admit…I am glad that Jillian chose Ed. I hope they are still together. I guess we’ll find out in tonight’s “After the Final Rose Special” which is airing at 10 p.m. EST.
In other news according to People Magazine, Jillian’s ring cost $60,000. That’s absolutely insane (in a good way)! Read all about it here. Seriously, do you how much you can buy with the cost of that ring? Wow!
The last month of summer is approaching, yes I know, it went by very fast but hopefully that does not deter you from going to the movies. I know it doesn’t for me. 🙂 Looking at the month as the whole, I find it interesting that some suspense thriller/horror movies are premiering this month as oppose to around Halloween. The movies that fall into this genre include “The Perfect Getaway”, “Halloween II”, and “The Final Destination”. Also a few tween movies seemed to have been thrown in the mix for this month including “Bandslam” with Vanessa Hudgens (“High School Musical)”, and “Post Grad” with Alexis Bledel (“The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants”).
In my opinion the potential movie blockbusters for the month of August are “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” and “District 9” which is produced by Academy Award winning Director Peter Jackson. Seems like the trend for the next year or two will be the return of the 80’s. There are a lot of 80’s movies that are getting remade (i.e. “Footloose” (2010), “Tron Legacy”) as well as 80’s cartoon characters and toys (i.e. “Voltron” (2011), “The Smurfs” (2010)) that are making it to the big screen. Who doesn’t love the 80’s? Although there comes a point where it is over kill. Where has all of the original material gone?
My spotlight picks for the month go to “Julie & Julia” and “The Paper Heart”. “Julie & Julia” stars Academy Award Winner Meryl Streep as Julia Child and Academy Award nominee Amy Adams plays Julie, a woman who decides to cook a recipe a day from Julia Child’s cookbooks for a whole year and write a blog about it. The movie is based on two true stories. “The Paper Heart” stars Michael Cera (“Juno”) and Charlyne Yi (“Knocked Up”) and the premise is Yi making a documentary (within a film) about what exactly “love” is. A possible sleeper hit may be “The Goods: Live Hard. Sell Hard” which stars Jeremy Piven.
Those are my August movie highlights. Click to continue reading about the other movies coming out next month, and don’t forget to check back for my Fall Movie Season Highlights.
