Fall Movie Season: October 2009

filmreel

Now that Fall is in full swing, what movies can we expect in the month of October? I know when I think about the month of October, the first thing that pops into my mind is Halloween and with Halloween I think scary/horror themed movies. There are a few scary/horror movies this month such as “Zombieland”, “The Stepfather”, and the lastest “Saw” installment “Saw VI”. I never saw a “Saw” film, but they must be popular in order for the studio to continue producing them. Those who are eagerly waiting for the next “Twilight” movie will have to wait another month, but if you need a vampire fix, then you may want to check out “Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant”.

I think October will be animation/cgi domination in the box office. The big releases that fall into this category are “Astro Boy”, “Where the Wild Things Are”, and for a limited time the 3D versions of “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “Toy Story/Toy Story 2”. There are few comedies out this coming month with Drew Barrymore’s “Whip It”, “Couples Retreat”, and “The Invention of Lying” starring Ricky Gervais and Jennifer Garner.

My spotlight picks of the month are “New York, I Love You” and “This Is It”. “New York, I Love You” is inspired by “Paris, I Love You” and it has an all-star cast and is directed by an all-star group of directors. The cast includes Bradley Cooper, Orlando Bloom, Natalie Portman, Christina Ricci, and “Dancing with the Stars” alum Cloris Leachman just to name a few. “This Is It” is the Michael Jackson special event concert which will be in theaters (IMAX too) for a limited time. The concept is bittersweet as it is Jackson’s final performance but also a celebration of his career. That’s my October overview, click on the link below to check out the rest of the movies coming out in the next month.

The funniest sound bite of the night came from host Tom Bergeron: Don’t Kym [Johnson] and Samantha [Harris] look like sexy chia pets tonight? (referring to their hair)

Now onto the results. Here were the bottom three couples in jeopardy of leaving the competition:

DWTS Week 2: Dance Recap

The men and women compete head to head for the first time this season. Director Baz Lurhmann (“Moulin Rouge”) sits in as a guest judge for Len Goodman who is currently in England this week. With only 4 days to prepare their routines, how did the pairs do this week?

Mya and Aaron Carter currently sit on top of the leader board with a two-way tie for first with a score of 27. Donny Osmond comes in at third with a score 25 and another solid performance under his belt. Injuries are starting to plague the contestants and professionals as ABC tweeted the latest injury updates. Tom DeLay has a pre-stress fracture in his foot that caused him to almost drop his partner Cheryl Burke during their Tango performance. Lacey Schwimmer despite her muscle strain injury, her and her partner Mark Dacascos turned in a solid performance which the judges went on to say that he was showing signs of becoming a great ballroom dancer. Check out Schwimmer’s vlog on Radar Online for her injury status.

In my opinion I think Mya delivered the best performance of the night. It was spunky and fun and Bruno called her “Mya the magnificent”! Both Joanna Krupa and Kelly Osbourne had a few mistakes which knocked them a little lower in the leader board this week. Although I do believe they will be able to bounce back for next week, if they are still around. My predication on who is leaving tonight is between Kathy Ireland and Chuck Liddell. Ireland improved from last week but as Carrie Ann pointed out, Ireland needs to stand out more. No offense to Chuck Liddell but he is quite scary on the dance floor and his dancing looks awkward. Find out all the pairs’ scores below and visit ABC.com to watch performances from Week 2 of “Dancing with the Stars”.

Are you watching “Glee”?

The official series premiere of “Glee” took place on September 9, 2009. In an effort to promote the show, there was a director’s cut of the preview episode of “Glee”, which aired a week before the premiere. The preview episode was first aired in May following an episode of “American Idol” in order to generate more buzz for the show.

I found the series premiere of “Glee” to be just as enjoyable as the preview episode and in my opinion there is still a lot of potential for the show to grow a bigger audience. According to the LA Times, the series premiere of “Glee” brought in 7.3 million viewers! According to Entertainment Weekly, the show has now been picked up for a full season.

Essentially this show is like a musical for the small screen. I wouldn’t put “Glee” in the same category of Disney’s “High School Musical”, although I can see how some people may think that. “Glee” is a dramedy (drama + comedy) focusing on the students and the teachers. In my opinion the song choices/performances in the episodes help drive the story line or at least provide some comedic relief.

So what is “Glee” about? Well, there are your common High School cliques on the show: jocks, cheerleaders, individualists, etc. However, at the bottom of the High School social food chain is the Glee club. Although at one time in the school’s history the Glee Club was the coolest group to be part of. As the glee club funds hang on by a thread and are in danger of being cut, there is one teacher, Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) who believes he can make the glee club as great as it once was. There aren’t many people behind Mr. Schuester’s vision except for a guidance counselor, Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays), who happens to have a crush on Mr. Schuester who isn’t exactly happily married. None would want the glee club to fail more than the cheerleader coach, Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch), who continually schemes for the demise of the glee club. As for the glee club members, the group is quirky but together they are trying to prove that their talent transcends their social status.

So far I really like what the show tries to touch upon. High School is awkward time and sometimes it isn’t as easy as it is for some people. I’m not just talking about academically, but more of social acceptance. I like how the show is exploring real topics that are prevalent in today’s youth(s) including: sexuality, acceptance, etc. Although I feel the overall message that music brings these youths together for a greater purpose is something everybody can relate to. If only some of that optimism would spill into reality, who knows what can be accomplished. It makes me think about the Olympics. Two weeks out of the year, the countries of the world are united as the world watches. It’s an amazing thing if you think about it. 🙂
