84th Academy Award Round-up and Winners

The 84th Academy Award Nominations were held on February 26, 2012. Billy Crystal served as host marking this his 9th time.  Crystal as always had a funny movie/song opening and his opening monologue was quite funny and he kept the award show moving.  As far as the awards, I found it quite coincidental that the jokes made were almost hinting who was going to win.  That or it was just a huge writing coincidence.  As far as the awards, there were some surprises and some well deserved wins.

Winter Movie Season: February 2012

filmreel

February the month of St. Valentine, President’s Day, and it’s also Black History Month. This month is a mix of movies. Some sequels, thrillers, and movies returning to theaters in 3D. The weekend before Valentine’s day is when a lot of big movies are being released. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson along with Josh Hutcherson (“The Hunger Games”) stars in the sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth, titled, “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island”. Academy Award winner, Denzel Washington, plays a fugitive in “Safe House”, and it’s up to Ryan Reynolds (“The Green Lantern”) to reel him in. “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” returns to theaters in 3D starring Academy Award winner Natalie Portman (“The Black Swan”), Ewan McGregor (“Moulin Rouge”) as a young Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Liam Neeson (“Taken”) as Qui-Gon Jinn. Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams star in “The Vow”, based on true events. The film’s storyline is reminiscent of Nicholas Sparks’s “The Notebook”. What kind of ending will it have? Sad, happy, or bittersweet?

Nicolas Cage returns as Johnny Blaze in the movie sequel, “Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance”, which could be entertaining or a big flop. Amanda Seyfried stars in the psychological thriller, “Gone”, where a serial killer whom kidnapped her two years prior returns and kidnaps her sister.

My spotlight pick of the month is “This Means War” starring Chris Pine (“Star Trek”), Tom Hardy (“Inception”), and Academy Award winner, Reese Witherspoon. It’s spy vs. spy vying for the attention of one woman. It looks like it could be funny and entertaining. How far will one go in order to win someone’s heart, or will neither win? Time to pick your teams.

Well that’s my February overview, click on the link below to check out the rest of the movies coming out this month and check back next month for more Winter Movie Season picks and if you’ve seen any of the films from this month…leave some feedback/suggestions in the Comments section on what to see.
