The 82nd Academy Awards were held on March 7, 2010. Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin were the hosts of the evening and those who were predicted to win, won.
The big winner of the night was “The Hurt Locker” winning 6 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, Kathryn Bigelow.
The night as a whole, in my opinion was not as entertaining as last year but it was a nice ceremony. The highlights of the evening were the opening number featuring Neil Patrick Harris, a performance by the League of Extraordinary Dancers featuring So You Think You Can Dance alumni, and finally the actor/actress speeches about the nominees in the Best Actor and Best Actress categories. Oprah Winfrey talked about nominee Gabourey Sidibe which had her in tears (and me too). A very touching moment for the first time nominee for the breakout performance of the year.
Special kudos to Sandra Bullock nabbing the Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role for the “The Blind Side”. What a way to cap off a great year for her!

The 82nd Oscar Nominations were announced on February 2, 2010. Ten films are in the running for Best Picture of the Year including “Avatar”, “Up in the Air”, “The Blind Side”, and Disney/Pixar’s “Up” which is also nominated for Best Animated Feature Film.
In terms of acting nominations, all who have been nominated this award season are nominated for an Oscar with a few differences. Sandra Bullock is nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role for the “The Blind Side”. Can Bullock round out a golden year with an Oscar? Outlook is looking good, as Bullock has snagged every acting award this season.

The last month of summer is approaching, yes I know, it went by very fast but hopefully that does not deter you from going to the movies. I know it doesn’t for me. 🙂 Looking at the month as the whole, I find it interesting that some suspense thriller/horror movies are premiering this month as oppose to around Halloween. The movies that fall into this genre include “The Perfect Getaway”, “Halloween II”, and “The Final Destination”. Also a few tween movies seemed to have been thrown in the mix for this month including “Bandslam” with Vanessa Hudgens (“High School Musical)”, and “Post Grad” with Alexis Bledel (“The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants”).
In my opinion the potential movie blockbusters for the month of August are “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” and “District 9” which is produced by Academy Award winning Director Peter Jackson. Seems like the trend for the next year or two will be the return of the 80’s. There are a lot of 80’s movies that are getting remade (i.e. “Footloose” (2010), “Tron Legacy”) as well as 80’s cartoon characters and toys (i.e. “Voltron” (2011), “The Smurfs” (2010)) that are making it to the big screen. Who doesn’t love the 80’s? Although there comes a point where it is over kill. Where has all of the original material gone?
My spotlight picks for the month go to “Julie & Julia” and “The Paper Heart”. “Julie & Julia” stars Academy Award Winner Meryl Streep as Julia Child and Academy Award nominee Amy Adams plays Julie, a woman who decides to cook a recipe a day from Julia Child’s cookbooks for a whole year and write a blog about it. The movie is based on two true stories. “The Paper Heart” stars Michael Cera (“Juno”) and Charlyne Yi (“Knocked Up”) and the premise is Yi making a documentary (within a film) about what exactly “love” is. A possible sleeper hit may be “The Goods: Live Hard. Sell Hard” which stars Jeremy Piven.
Those are my August movie highlights. Click to continue reading about the other movies coming out next month, and don’t forget to check back for my Fall Movie Season Highlights.

Check out this post from Comingsoon.net on Peter Jackson’s upcoming projects including “District 9”, “The Hobbit”, and “The Lovely Bones”. Jackson produced the upcoming Sci-Fi flick “District 9” which is set to open in theaters on August 14, 2009. Also mentioned was that the first draft for “The Hobbit” will be finished in a few weeks. The most exciting news to me from this post was that the first trailer for “The Lovely Bones” will be released on August 9th.
“The Lovely Bones” is based on the best-selling novel by Alice Sebold. The book is absolutely amazing and on paper the cast is an award-winning combination. Amongst the cast there are Academy Award winners, nominees, etc. A very accomplished cast indeed. Saoirse Ronan plays the title character Susie Salmon and her on-screen parents will be played by Mark Wahlberg and Rachel Weisz. Full cast list can be found on IMDB.com.
