Happy New Year! What better way to celebrate the new year with the first blog post in 2013! Plenty of great movies to see this month in addition to some December 2012 movies still in the theaters. Such as Golden Globe nominated films “Les Miserables”, “Zero Dark Thirty” and Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained”. Also there is “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”, Judd Apatow’s “This is 40”, and Tom Cruise stars as “Jack Reacher” based on the novels by Lee Child.
The month kicks off with the horror thriller “Texas Chainsaw 3D”. Mid-month Mark Wahlberg and Academy Award winner Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”) star in the crime drama “Broken City”. He’s…back! Arnold Schwarzenegger stars in “The Last Stand”. Schwarzenegger plays a sheriff who has to stop a drug cartel leader with the help of his inexperienced crew members. At the end of the month, Jeremy Renner (“The Avengers”) and Gemma Arterton (“Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time”) play Hansel and Gretel in a dark spin-off of the fairy-tale where the siblings are bounty hunters who track and kill witches. Kind of cross between the TV shows, ABC’s Once Upon a Time and NBC’s Grimm.
My spotlight pick of the month is “Gangster Squad”, which has an all-star cast including Academy Award winner Sean Penn (“Mystic River”), Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, and Emma Stone. It’s a crime drama that’s set in the 1940s and 50s where the LAPD fights to keep gangsters off the streets.

In the fourth film of the Mission: Impossible franchise, J.J. Abrams switches sides and produces while Brad Bird makes his live-action directorial debut. Bird is probably best known for directing animated films such as “The Incredibles”, and “Ratatouille”. Tom Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt with some new cast members including Lost’s Josh Holloway, Simon Pegg (“Star Trek”), and Academy Award nominee Jeremy Renner (“The Hurt Locker”). Full cast list can be found here.
“Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” is due out in theaters on December 16, 2011. Even though the film has some “Alias” alumni behind it, was this film rushed out of the gate? Post your thoughts in the Comments section below.
Summer is coming to a close and now it’s almost Fall. So what movies can we expect the first month after Summer? My prediction is that this month’s potential box office hits will either come from a family film or a scary/horror movie. Chris Rodriguez’s latest film “Machete” and the latest installment (in 3D) of the “Resident Evil” franchise open this month as the Halloween precursor movies.
Family films “Alpha and Omega” and “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole” seek to rule the box office and both are presented in 3D. “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole” is based upon the novels by Kathryn Lasky.
Looking for more of a rom com or comedy film? Perhaps check out “Easy A” starring Emma Stone and Amanda Bynes. “The Romantics” starring Josh Duhamel and Katie Holmes and “You Again” which stars Kristen Bell and Jamie Lee Curtis.
A possible sleeper hit could be “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps”, which stars Academy Award winner Michael Douglas reprising his Oscar winning role of Gordon Gekko. The film also stars Shia LaBeouf (“Transformers”) and Academy Award nominee Carey Mulligan (“An Education”).
My spotlight picks of the month are “Waiting for Superman” and “The Town”. “Waiting for Superman” is a documentary which focuses on education in America and is directed by Academy Award winning director Davis Guggenheim (“An Inconvenient Truth”). Academy Award winner Ben Affleck (“Good Will Hunting”) directs and stars in “The Town” along with Academy Award nominee Jeremy Renner (“The Hurt Locker”), Rebecca Hall (“The Prestige”) and Mad Men’s Jon Hamm.

So I caught the “Unusuals” premiere this past Wednesday on ABC and I must say I was plesantly surprised. The promos didn’t really give anything away about the show, and after watching the series premiere…I am intrigued. You might recognize a few of the stars which include Amber Tamblyn (Joan of Arcadia), Jeremy Renner (S.W.A.T.), Harold Perrineau (Lost), and Adam Goldberg (Friends, How to Lose a Guy in 10 days). According to TV.com, the season order for this series was cut to 10 as oppose to the industry standard of 13 since this year’s midseason slate is full. ABC’s other midseason show “Castle” (Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic have such great chemistry!) has a shortened season as well. “The Unusuals” features the quirky cops of the 2nd precinct set in the back drop of New York City. Yes the cops of the 2nd precinct have their quirks, but they have interesting back stories and “secrets”. Interestingly enough…Amber Tamblyn’s character is suppose to be the one who has to discover everyone’s “secrets”, particularly Jeremy Renner’s character, Detective Jason Walsh. In general, I thought it was a good premiere and if the episodes that follow are as solid as its premiere…then I hope we get to see how this story pans out. If you missed the premiere…you can watch it on ABC.com.
