How time does fly! It’s already the Spring Movie Season. Certainly there are films this month that are potential movie blockbusters. Films such as “The Matrix” and Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” brought record box office numbers recorded for the month of March. A lot of hype is behind some of the films being released this month…curious to see if they live up to the hype or if they fall short. Opening the month is Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax”, which features the voice talents of Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, and Danny DeVito. Eddie Murphy becomes a silent film star in “A Thousand Words”. Murphy’s character has to keep quiet or face the consequences.
Disney presents “John Carter”, which looks like Gladiator meets Planet of the Apes on the planet Mars. There have been pretty good reviews on the film so it may be worth checking out. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill star in “21 Jump Street”, which is an adaptation of the popular late 80’s to early 90’s TV series, which starred Johnny Depp.
Toward the end of the month, the sequel to Clash of the Titans, titled “Wrath of the Titans” is released. Most of cast including Sam Worthington and Liam Neeson return as well as some new cast members. Julia Roberts stars as the evil queen in “Mirror Mirror”, which is one of films this year that is based on Snow White. This summer, Snow White and the Huntsman, promises to be a twist on the classic fairytale.
My spotlight picks of the month are the much anticipated screen adaptation of “The Hunger Games” and from the Academy Award winning writer of Slumdog Millionaire, “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen”, starring Ewan McGregor (“Moulin Rouge!”) and Emily Blunt (“The Young Victoria”). Both films look intriguing in their own ways.

Spring is almost upon us! So what films can we expect for the month of March? The month kicks off with Matt Damon and Emily Blunt starring in “The Adjustment Bureau”. Also opening the first weekend of March are “Rango” starring Johnny Depp, a modern day twist on the classic story of Beauty and the Beast is “Beastly” starring “I am Number Four” star Alex Pettyfer and Vanessa Hudgens.
Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender star in the new adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s “Jane Eyre”, Los Angeles is under attack in “Battle: Los Angeles”, and “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke moves on from Vampires and embraces Wolves in “Red Riding Hood”.
Mid month Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro star in “Limitless” that asks “What if there weren’t boundaries?”. Toward the end of the month, Ashley Greene (“Twilight”) stars in “Skateland”.
My spotlight pick of the month is Win Win starring Academy Award nominee Paul Giamatti. This film was an official selection for the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. A feel good film for Spring.

Winter is almost upon us and the holiday season approaches. So what films will light up the holiday season? The month kicks off with Natalie Portman starring in Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan”, where dance can take a dark turn.
Mid-month is when some of the bigger movie releases are going to emerge. The third installment of the “Chronicles of Narnia” franchise, “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” takes flight. Academy Award winner, Helen Mirren, stars in an adaptation of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” while Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie star in the thriller “The Tourist”.
Getting a head start over the Christmas Day movie releases we have Disney’s “Tron: Legacy” (in 3D) which is sure to be a big hit, the movie adaptation of the popular cartoon Yogi Bear, and the rom com “How Do You Know” starring Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon (“Walk the Line”) and funny men, Owen Wilson (“Wedding Crashers”) and Paul Rudd (“I Love You, Man”). As for the Christmas releases we have the latest film with the Fockers, “Little Fockers”, the new adaptation of “Gulliver’s Travels” starring Jack Black (“School of Rock”), and the Coen Brothers’s “True Grit”. Also Academy Award winner Gwyneth Paltrow stars in “Country Strong”, which opens as a limited release but will expand in January 2011. The film has also been generating some Oscar buzz.
My spotlight picks of the month are “The Company Men” and “The Fighter”. Mark Wahlberg (“The Italian Job”) and Christian Bale (“Batman Begins”) star in “The Fighter” which is gaining some Oscar buzz as well as “The Company Men”. Although both films have similar themes as other Oscar nominated films being “Rocky” and “Up in the Air”, they both seem to have a special quality that may be worth checking out.

Academy Award Winner, Heath Ledger (“The Dark Knight”), leads an all-star cast in his last film titled “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”. Full cast list can be found here. The film is set to hit theaters on December 25, 2009, as a limited release. Be sure to check out the behind the scenes featurette below via UK Yahoo! Movies.
Here is a brief synopsis via IMDB.com:
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is a fantastical morality tale, set in the present day. It tells the story of Dr Parnassus and his extraordinary ‘Imaginarium’, a travelling show where members of the audience get an irresistible opportunity to choose between light and joy or darkness and gloom. Blessed with the extraordinary gift of guiding the imaginations of others, Dr Parnassus is cursed with a dark secret. Long ago he made a bet with the devil, Mr Nick, in which he won immortality. Many centuries later, on meeting his one true love, Dr Parnassus made another deal with the devil, trading his immortality for youth, on condition that when his first-born reached its 16th birthday he or she would become the property of Mr Nick.

July is almost upon us, so what potential blockbusters are waiting in the wings? Two words: Harry Potter. I cannot wait to see this film! The trailers and clips look amazing and the book is awesome! Potter fans unite! If you haven’t read the books, or have yet to see any of the movies…you need to see this film! “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” is one of the best books of the Harry Potter series and the film is going to be epic (if done right).
Other films that will challenge for top of the box office, in my opinion, will include “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs”, “Bruno” starring Sasha Baron Cohen (“Borat”), and “Public Enemies” starring Johnny Depp (“Pirates of the Caribbean”) and Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard (“La vie en rose”). There are a few comedies and romantic comedies to look out for including “I Hate Valentine’s Day” which reunites the stars of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”. Nia Vardalos has also written and directed this film, so I am intrigued. Heroes’ star Hayden Panettiere is Beth Cooper in the book to movie adaptation of “I Love You, Beth Cooper” by Larry Doyle (“The Simpsons”). Katherine Heigl (“Grey’s Anatomy”）and Gerard Butler (“300”) pair up on screen for “The Ugly Truth”, which looks like a cross between “Someone Like You” meets “Broadcast News”. Judd Apatow’s latest film, “Funny People”, starring Adam Sandler and Seth Rogan will be in theaters at the end of the month which looks to be both funny and possibly a tear jerker. What kind of summer would it be if there wasn’t an animated comedic cartoon by Disney? Disney’s “G-Force” in 3D will be premiering later in the month.
Two movies of note are “In the Loop” and “(500) Days of Summer”. Both movies were official selections at the Sundance Film Festival this year. “In the Loop” looks hilarious and “(500) Days of Summer” looks really cute and it stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt (“3rd Rock from the Sun”) and Zooey Deschanel (“Yes Man”).
