70th Annual Golden Globe Award Winners

Source: Hollywood Foreign Press

The 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards took place on January 13, 2013. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted the event. Their opening monologue was quite funny and started off the night well. Stars of the small and big screen gathered and even former President of the United States, Bill Clinton, made an appearance in order to introduce one of the Golden Globe nominated movies, “Lincoln”. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone presented the award for Best Foreign Language Film, but before it was presented they bantered on which of them was the worst actor. The film that won was “Amour”, which hails from Austria and Schwarzenegger was able to present the award to a fellow countryman.

Robert Downey Jr. presented the Cecil B. DeMille award to this year’s recipient, two-time Golden Globe and Academy Award winner, Jodie Foster (“The Accused”, “Silence of the Lambs”). Foster’s career has spanned five decades and her speech was very heart-felt as she spoke about her personal life and professional career. She started off her speech quoting a line from a SNL skit, which was made famous by former SNL star Molly Shannon. Foster ended her speech with, “Here’s to the next 50 years”.

As for the awards in the Motion Pictures category, “Les Miserables”, walked away with the most awards including Best Supporting Actress – Anne Hathaway, Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy – Hugh Jackman, and Best Musical/Comedy. In the category of Motion Picture – Drama, “Argo” nabbed the honor of Best Picture – Drama and Ben Affleck won Best Director. Affleck’s Oscar snub is now even more intriguing since the film won a Critics’ Choice Award and now a Golden Globe and he has won the directing award at both of these award ceremonies. More Critics’ Choices went on to win tonight including, Jennifer Lawrence – Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for “Silveer Linings Playbook”, Jessica Chastain – Best Actress in a Drama for “Zero Dark Thirty”, and Daniel Day-Lewis – Best Actor in a Drama for “Lincoln”. Day-Lewis is also nominated for an Academy Award for his portrayal of our 16th President, Abraham Lincoln, could this be the role that gives him his third Oscar?

In the Television Category, “Homeland”, earned the most awards including Best Actress in a TV Drama – Claire Danes, Best Actor in a TV Drama – Damian Lewis, and Best TV Drama. HBO series, “Girls”, won two awards including Best Actress in a TV Comedy – Lena Dunham, and Best TV Comedy or Musical. In the Miniseries/TV Movie category, “Game Change”, won three awards amongst which was Best Miniseries or TV Movie.

18th Annual Critics’ Choice Award Winners

Source: Broadcast Film Critics Association

The 18th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards took place on January 10, 2013. “Silveer Linings Playbook” collected the most awards of the night with four wins. Those awards include Best Acting Ensemble, Best Actress in a Comedy – Jennifer Lawrence, Best Actor in a Comedy – Bradley Cooper, and Best Comedy. Jennifer Lawrence also won Best Actress in an Action Film for her role in “The Hunger Games”. “Skyfall” won three awards including Best Song – “Skyfall”, Best Actor in an Action Film – Daniel Craig, and Best Action Film. Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln”, also won three awards, which includes Best Actor – Daniel Day-Lewis.

“Argo” nabbed the top honor of the night, which was Best Picture. Ben Affleck won Best Director for “Argo”. This is especially intriguing with the announcement of the Oscar nominations today and Affleck was not given a directing nomination for “Argo” although the film is in the running for Best Picture. It will be interesting to see the outcome of the Golden Globe Awards, which are airing on January 13, 2013. Generally speaking over the years the Critics’ Choice(s) have been pretty good indicators of whom will go on to win a Golden Globe and/or Oscar.

Fall Movie Season: September 2012

filmreel

The Summer Movie Season has flown by but there are still many movies to see this month including some big hits lingering in theaters from the summer. Those movies include “The Dark Knight Rises”, “Total Recall”, and “The Bourne Legacy”.

The month kicks off with the thriller “The Cold Light of Day” starring Henry Cavill (“Immortals”), Bruce Willis (“Die Hard”), and Academy Award nominee Sigourney Weaver (“Avatar”). The expanded release of the comedy “For a Good Time, Call…” makes it way into more theaters with appearances by comedic actors/actresses like Seth Rogan (“Knocked Up”), Justin Long (“Accepted”), and Nia Vardalos (“My Big Fat Greek Wedding”) just to name a few.

Mid-month a box office smash returns to theaters but in 3D. Disney/Pixar’s “Finding Nemo” in 3D should be an amazing feast for the eyes. Also the reboot of the Comic Book character Judge Dredd makes it way back to the big screen in “Dredd 3D”. The original film was released in 1995 and Sylvester Stallone starred as the title character. It wasn’t a great film, so hopefully the reboot is better.

At the end of the month, Adam Sandler (“Big Daddy”) and many SNL alumni and comedic actors/actresses voice the animated film “Hotel Transylvania”, a resort where monsters go, it could be a hit or big flop. Other voice talents include Andy Samberg, Kevin James, Molly Shannon, and Selena Gomez just to name a few. Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt star in the movie “Looper” as the same character, Joe. Although things become difficult when future and past Joe meet and one has to eliminate the other. Also Academy Award nominee, Anna Kendrick, stars in “Pitch Perfect” which is college A Capella meets Glee.

My spotlight pick of the month is “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” based on the novel by Stephen Chbosky. A coming-of-age story starring Logan Lerman (“Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief”), Emma Watson from the Harry Potter film franchise, and Ezra Miller.

Well that’s my September overview, click on the link below to check out the rest of the movies coming out this month and check back next month for more Fall Movie Season movie release dates and my picks of the month! Fall Movie Season: September 2011

filmreel

The Summer has flown by and now it’s time for the Fall Movie Season. This is kind of a laid back month for movies. There are star studded films but none that I foresee to be a box office blockbuster. “Contagion” opens the first weekend after Labor Day, which has an all-star cast including some Academy Award winners and nominees. The premise takes our fears about air born diseases and pumps up the scare factor to the max.

Following week we have “Drive” starring Ryan Gosling, which is reminiscent of “The Transporter”. Toward the end of the month are the films that may bring in the crowds. Jason Statham (“The Transporter”) along with Clive Owen (“Closer”), Chuck‘s Yvonne Strahovski, and Academy Award Winner Robert De Niro star in “Killer Elite”, which looks like it’s going to be a high-octane action flick. Brad Pitt stars in “Moneyball”, based on Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane and how he put together a baseball club on a budget. This film could be interesting or a flop.

Chris Evans (“Captain America: The First Avenger”) and Anna Faris (“Scary Movie”) star in “What’s Your Number?”, based on the novel, “20 Times a Lady”, by Karyn Bosnak. Looks like it could be funny but at the same time it could end up being predictable. It’s all in the story-telling.

My spotlight pick of the month are “50/50”. Seth Rogan (“Knocked Up”) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (“(500) Days of Summer”) star in “50/50”, which looks funny but yet poignant. It could be a possible tear jerker.

“The Dark Knight Rises” – Teaser Trailer

Video Source: MTV.com

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Check out the teaser trailer for “The Dark Knight Rises”, which is slated to be released in theaters on July 20, 2012. Returning stars include Christian Bale who plays Bruce Wayne/Batman, Michael Caine (Alfred), Gary Oldman (Jim Gordon), and Morgan Freeman (Lucius Fox). Anne Hathaway joins the cast as Selina Kyle/Catwoman. As for the rest of the cast, this “final” installment of “Dark Knight” prequels seems to be Batman meets Inception (which Christopher Nolan also directed) as most of the Inception cast sans Leonardo DiCaprio and Ellen Page are in this movie. Those cast members include Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hardy who plays Bane, and Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard (“La Vie en Rose”).

Summer Movie Season: July 2010

filmreel

Summer is full in swing, so what movies can be expect in the month of July? This July seems to be the month of potential box office hits. M. Night Shyalaman directs “The Last Airbender”, based on the animated series, which kicks off the month and is a potential blockbuster. The 3D animated film “Despicable Me” is sure to draw in big numbers as well.

The team behind Disney’s National Treasure, team up to bring us “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”. The film stars National Treasure’s Nicolas Cage and Jay Baruchel (“She’s Out of My League”). I think this film will either be a big hit or a big miss.

Christopher Nolan (“The Dark Knight”) directs “Inception” which seems like the most intriguing film of the month. The film stars Academy Award nominees Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Departed”) and Ellen Page (“Juno”).

Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie (“Girl Interrupted”) returns to action in the action thriller “Salt”. Is Jolie a Russian spy, or is she being set up? Looks like it is a cross between The Bourne Identity and The Fugitive.

My spotlight pick of the month is “Charlie St. Cloud” starring Zac Efron. Looks like it will be a bit of a tear jerker.

“Inception” – Teaser Trailer

Source: Yahoo! Movies
Vodpod videos no longer available.

more about "Inception Teaser Trailer", posted with vodpod

Here is the teaser trailer for “Inception” which is written and directed by Christopher Nolan (“The Dark Knight”). The cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Cillian Murphy, Ellen Page, and Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard. Full cast list can be found on IMDB.com. The movie is described as a sci-fi thriller, and not much is written about it after that. What is this film about? The official website is up and running but it is almost like a teaser website. It features a spinning top, like the one in the teaser trailer, which you can control with your mouse. “Inception” will open in theaters on July 16, 2010.

How do you measure (500) Days of Summer?

525,600 minutes – how do you measure a year in the life? — Jonathan Larson

As the sound of the narrator’s voice resonated through the theater, the opening line was clearly stated: “This is NOT a love story”. “(500) Days of Summer” is a movie about love found, love lost, and how to deal. It really delves into the question – what if this isn’t my happily ever after? The movie really excels in delivering its message – “life doesn’t always turn out the way you plan it”. It’s not about how you get from Point A to Point B, but it’s all about the journey and the moments that occur in between.

Summer Movie Season: July 2009

filmreelJuly is almost upon us, so what potential blockbusters are waiting in the wings? Two words: Harry Potter. I cannot wait to see this film! The trailers and clips look amazing and the book is awesome! Potter fans unite! If you haven’t read the books, or have yet to see any of the movies…you need to see this film! “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” is one of the best books of the Harry Potter series and the film is going to be epic (if done right).

Other films that will challenge for top of the box office, in my opinion, will include “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs”, “Bruno” starring Sasha Baron Cohen (“Borat”), and “Public Enemies” starring Johnny Depp (“Pirates of the Caribbean”) and Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard (“La vie en rose”). There are a few comedies and romantic comedies to look out for including “I Hate Valentine’s Day” which reunites the stars of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”. Nia Vardalos has also written and directed this film, so I am intrigued. Heroes’ star Hayden Panettiere is Beth Cooper in the book to movie adaptation of “I Love You, Beth Cooper” by Larry Doyle (“The Simpsons”). Katherine Heigl (“Grey’s Anatomy”)and Gerard Butler (“300”) pair up on screen for “The Ugly Truth”, which looks like a cross between “Someone Like You” meets “Broadcast News”. Judd Apatow’s latest film, “Funny People”, starring Adam Sandler and Seth Rogan will be in theaters at the end of the month which looks to be both funny and possibly a tear jerker. What kind of summer would it be if there wasn’t an animated comedic cartoon by Disney? Disney’s “G-Force” in 3D will be premiering later in the month.

Two movies of note are “In the Loop” and “(500) Days of Summer”.  Both movies were official selections at the Sundance Film Festival this year. “In the Loop” looks hilarious and “(500) Days of Summer” looks really cute and it stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt (“3rd Rock from the Sun”) and Zooey Deschanel (“Yes Man”).
