Summer Movie Season: June 2011

filmreel

The Summer Movie Season is under way! The films this month are still warming up the box office but there are some that could be box office hits. “X-Men: First Class” takes flight and opens the month which is a prequel to the “X-Men” films starring James McAvoy (“Atonement”) and Michael Fassbender (“Jane Eyre”) as the younger versions of Professor Charles Xavier aka Professor X and Erik Lehnsherr aka Magneto.

Reminiscent of the hype behind “Cloverfield”, Steven Spielberg produces J.J. Abrams’s film “Super 8”, which sounds like a cross between “Lost” and “Jaws”. A partnership that hopes to have movie goers flocking.

The following week Ryan Reynolds is “Green Lantern”, which could be a big hit or a huge miss. Jim Carrey stars in the comedy “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” which looks like a delight for a family film choice.

It wouldn’t be summer without a Pixar film and this time around it’s a sequel, “Cars 2”. I rather enjoyed the original “Cars” film, so I’m looking forward to seeing what they’ve done with the sequel.

Toward the end of the month we have “Bad Teacher”. Cameron Diaz stars as the “Bad Teacher” and other cast members include Justin Timberlake (“The Social Network”) and Jason Segel (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall”). This looks like a film that could have big laughs or may come up short. Also at the end of the month is the third film in the “Transformers” franchise, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon”. Most of the cast members return sans Megan Fox.

My spotlight pick of the month is a film that is out already. If you haven’t seen it yet, go see “X-Men: First Class”. It was fun summer film that was done well and the cast was great and it was certainly the best film in the “X-Men” franchise. Hopefully they can squeeze another prequel film using the “X-Men: First Class” cast.

Fall Movie Season: October 2010

filmreel

It’s October and the theme of the month is Halloween, scary movies, and the paranormal. If that’s not your cup of tea, there are some feel good movies and action movies coming out this month as well. Opening the month is “The Social Network”, which has been garnering some buzz. “Case 39” stars Bradley Cooper (“The Hangover”) and Renee Zellweger which is one the scary/horror films of the month.

Stepping away from the scary/horror films, then you want to turn to some family films like “Life As We Know It” and Disney’s “Secretariat”. Based upon the true story of the last Triple Crown winning horse, can Secretariat score the numbers that Seabiscuit garnered? I guess we shall see.

Also gaining some good feedback is “Red” based upon the D.C. Comics graphic novel by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner. Academy Award winner, Helen Mirren, wields a large automatic weapon in the trailer. It’s either going to be awesome or an epic fail.

I believe the potential blockbusters of the month will be a scary/horror film. Could it be a sequel, such as “Saw 3D” or “Paranormal Activity 2” or possibly “My Soul to Take” from Wes Craven, director of the “Scream” film franchise.

My spotlight pick of the month is “It’s Kind of a Funny Story” adapted from Ned Vizzini’s 2006 novel of the same name and the film stars Zach Galifianakis (“The Hangover”). Looks to be an offbeat and quirky dramedy (drama/comedy) with possible tear jerking moments.

Fall Movie Season: September 2010

filmreel

Summer is coming to a close and now it’s almost Fall. So what movies can we expect the first month after Summer? My prediction is that this month’s potential box office hits will either come from a family film or a scary/horror movie. Chris Rodriguez’s latest film “Machete” and the latest installment (in 3D) of the “Resident Evil” franchise open this month as the Halloween precursor movies.

Family films “Alpha and Omega” and “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole” seek to rule the box office and both are presented in 3D. “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole” is based upon the novels by Kathryn Lasky.

Looking for more of a rom com or comedy film? Perhaps check out “Easy A” starring Emma Stone and Amanda Bynes. “The Romantics” starring Josh Duhamel and Katie Holmes and “You Again” which stars Kristen Bell and Jamie Lee Curtis.

A possible sleeper hit could be “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps”, which stars Academy Award winner Michael Douglas reprising his Oscar winning role of Gordon Gekko. The film also stars Shia LaBeouf (“Transformers”) and Academy Award nominee Carey Mulligan (“An Education”).

My spotlight picks of the month are “Waiting for Superman” and “The Town”. “Waiting for Superman” is a documentary which focuses on education in America and is directed by Academy Award winning director Davis Guggenheim (“An Inconvenient Truth”). Academy Award winner Ben Affleck (“Good Will Hunting”) directs and stars in “The Town” along with Academy Award nominee Jeremy Renner (“The Hurt Locker”), Rebecca Hall (“The Prestige”) and Mad Men’s Jon Hamm.

Winter Movie Season: January 2010

filmreel

As we ring in the New Year, we enter a new decade! So what movies can we expect in the first month of the New Year? Vampires, Romance, and the Supernatural…oh my! If those movie themes do not appeal to you, there are plenty of other films being released this month. Daybreakers, The Book of Eli, and Legion have been promoted the most in my opinion. All three take place in the future and humanity has to be saved in some way.

Family films of the month include Jackie Chan’s The Spy Next Door, Extraordinary Measures, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is the Tooth Fairy. The rom com movies of the month are Leap Year starring Academy Award nominee Amy Adams and When in Rome starring Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel.

My spotlight pick of the month is Creation, which is based on the biography,“Annie’s Box”, written by Charles Darwin’s great great-grandson.. The film stars Paul Bettany as Charles Darwin and Academy Award winner Jennifer Connelly (“A Beautiful Mind”). Well that’s my January overview, click on the link below to check out the rest of the movies coming out in the next month.

“When in Rome” – Trailer

more about "“When in Rome” – Trailer", posted with vodpod

Kristen Bell (“Veronica Mars”) and Josh Duhamel (“Transformers”) star in this cute looking romantic comedy about a woman who is unlucky in love but her luck seems to change after a trip to Rome. What can I say…I’m always game to see a good rom-com movie! 🙂

Here is a synopsis via IMDB.com:
Beth Harper (Bell) is a young, successful real estate agent … but she’s completely unlucky in love. However, when the New Yorker travels to Rome to see her newlywed sister, she impulsively steals some coins from a reputed fountain of love, and is then aggressively pursued by a band of wannabe lovers.

The film also stars Academy Award winner Anjelica Huston. I’ve really liked Bell’s work on “Veronica Mars” and ever since the show ended in 2007, she has really made an excellent transition from TV to Movies. Up next for Bell is “Astro Boy”, which will be coming out in theaters this October. Josh Duhamel’s last romantic comedy role was “Win a Date with Tad Hamilton” and currently he can be seen in the “Transformers” movie franchise.
