Fall Movie Season: November 2011

filmreel

This November is packed with big action, big laughs, and big sequels. Kicking off the month is “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas”. The cast is back kicking it to another dimension…and that’s 3D. Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy lead the comedic cast of “Tower Heist”, which opens the same weekend.

Following week from the producers of 300, the “Immortals” hits theaters starring Henry Cavill (“The Tudors”) and Mickey Rourke. A film that can very well be a big hit. Adam Sandler performs double duty playing both the male and female lead in “Jack and Jill”. This film could be really funny or a flop.

Mid month is the weekend of sequels. The sequel to the Academy Award winning film Happy Feet dances its way to theaters again with “Happy Feet Two”. Part 1 of the final installment of the Twilight series, “Breaking Dawn” hits theaters too.

What’s November without Thanksgiving Day movie releases? This Thanksgiving Academy Award winning director, Martin Scorcese, directs a star filled cast in “Hugo”. The animated film “Arthur Christmas” answers the question: “So how does Santa deliver all those presents in one night?” Voiced by talents including James McAvoy (“Atonement”), Jim Broadbent (“Bridget Jones’s Diary”), Hugh Laurie (“House”), and Bill Nighy.

My spotlight pick of the month is “The Muppets”. Jason Segel (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall”) co-wrote and stars in the new Muppet film as well as Academy Award nominee Amy Adams. Who doesn’t love the Muppets?

Fall Movie Season: September 2011

filmreel

The Summer has flown by and now it’s time for the Fall Movie Season. This is kind of a laid back month for movies. There are star studded films but none that I foresee to be a box office blockbuster. “Contagion” opens the first weekend after Labor Day, which has an all-star cast including some Academy Award winners and nominees. The premise takes our fears about air born diseases and pumps up the scare factor to the max.

Following week we have “Drive” starring Ryan Gosling, which is reminiscent of “The Transporter”. Toward the end of the month are the films that may bring in the crowds. Jason Statham (“The Transporter”) along with Clive Owen (“Closer”), Chuck‘s Yvonne Strahovski, and Academy Award Winner Robert De Niro star in “Killer Elite”, which looks like it’s going to be a high-octane action flick. Brad Pitt stars in “Moneyball”, based on Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane and how he put together a baseball club on a budget. This film could be interesting or a flop.

Chris Evans (“Captain America: The First Avenger”) and Anna Faris (“Scary Movie”) star in “What’s Your Number?”, based on the novel, “20 Times a Lady”, by Karyn Bosnak. Looks like it could be funny but at the same time it could end up being predictable. It’s all in the story-telling.

My spotlight pick of the month are “50/50”. Seth Rogan (“Knocked Up”) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (“(500) Days of Summer”) star in “50/50”, which looks funny but yet poignant. It could be a possible tear jerker.

Winter Movie Season: December 2009

filmreel

In the past, there have been many December blockbuster hits including the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. This December seems to be the month of potential blockbuster hits with Academy Award winning directors behind them. Plenty of promotion has gone into James Cameron’s latest film “Avatar” which is an action/fantasy film starring Sam Worthington (“Terminator Salvation”). Clint Eastwood’s latest film “Invictus” has some Oscar buzz to it and it stars Matt Damon and Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman. Peter Jackson directs the screen adaptation of “The Lovely Bones” which has also garnered some Oscar buzz and it is definitely one of my top picks to see this December.

Rob Marshall (“Chicago”) brings “Nine” from stage to screen with an all-star cast including Academy Award Winners Marion Cotillard, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Academy Award nominee Kate Hudson. Another film that has Oscar buzz surrounding it is “Up in the Air” starring Academy Award Winner George Clooney. Before Robert Downey Jr. reprises his Iron Man role this summer, he first tackles on the role of “Sherlock Holmes”, which looks fun and action packed. Robert De Niro, Drew Barrymore, Sam Rockwell, and Kate Beckinsale star in “Everybody’s Fine” which is probably the only film that takes place during the Holiday season. In terms of family films, there’s “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel”.

My spotlight picks of the month are “The Last Station” and “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”. “The Last Station” is a historical drama based on author Leo Tolstoy’s life and the cast is top notch. The film stars Christopher Plummer (“The Sound of Music”), James McAvoy (“Atonement”), and Academy Award winner Helen Mirren (“The Queen”). “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” is Heath Ledger’s (“The Dark Knight”) final film and looks to be quite a show. Well that’s my December overview, click on the link below to check out the rest of the movies coming out in the next month.

Academy Award Winner, Heath Ledger (“The Dark Knight”), leads an all-star cast in his last film titled “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”. Full cast list can be found here. The film is set to hit theaters on December 25, 2009, as a limited release. Be sure to check out the behind the scenes featurette below via UK Yahoo! Movies.

Here is a brief synopsis via IMDB.com:

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is a fantastical morality tale, set in the present day. It tells the story of Dr Parnassus and his extraordinary ‘Imaginarium’, a travelling show where members of the audience get an irresistible opportunity to choose between light and joy or darkness and gloom. Blessed with the extraordinary gift of guiding the imaginations of others, Dr Parnassus is cursed with a dark secret. Long ago he made a bet with the devil, Mr Nick, in which he won immortality. Many centuries later, on meeting his one true love, Dr Parnassus made another deal with the devil, trading his immortality for youth, on condition that when his first-born reached its 16th birthday he or she would become the property of Mr Nick.
