Spring Movie Season: March 2012

filmreel

How time does fly! It’s already the Spring Movie Season. Certainly there are films this month that are potential movie blockbusters. Films such as “The Matrix” and Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” brought record box office numbers recorded for the month of March. A lot of hype is behind some of the films being released this month…curious to see if they live up to the hype or if they fall short. Opening the month is Dr. Seuss’ “The Lorax”, which features the voice talents of Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, and Danny DeVito. Eddie Murphy becomes a silent film star in “A Thousand Words”. Murphy’s character has to keep quiet or face the consequences.

Disney presents “John Carter”, which looks like Gladiator meets Planet of the Apes on the planet Mars. There have been pretty good reviews on the film so it may be worth checking out. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill star in “21 Jump Street”, which is an adaptation of the popular late 80’s to early 90’s TV series, which starred Johnny Depp.

Toward the end of the month, the sequel to Clash of the Titans, titled “Wrath of the Titans” is released. Most of cast including Sam Worthington and Liam Neeson return as well as some new cast members. Julia Roberts stars as the evil queen in “Mirror Mirror”, which is one of films this year that is based on Snow White. This summer, Snow White and the Huntsman, promises to be a twist on the classic fairytale.

My spotlight picks of the month are the much anticipated screen adaptation of “The Hunger Games” and from the Academy Award winning writer of Slumdog Millionaire, “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen”, starring Ewan McGregor (“Moulin Rouge!”) and Emily Blunt (“The Young Victoria”). Both films look intriguing in their own ways.

Summer Movie Season: August 2010

filmreel

Can you believe that we’re already in the last month of Summer? So what movies round out the summer? “The Other Guys” and “Step Up 3D” open during the first weekend of this month.

Academy Award winner Julia Roberts stars in “Eat Pray Love” based on the bestselling novel by Elizabeth Gilbert. “The Expendables” is an action-thriller starring a cast that in one point or another played a hero or a villain. Michael Cera stars in “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” where he tries to win the girl but in order to do so he has to get past her exes.

Family film “Nanny McPhee Returns” this month starring Academy Award winner Emma Thompson and Academy Award nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal (“Crazy Heart”). If you are looking for a rom com then check out “Going the Distance” starring Drew Barrymore and Justin Long.

At the end of the month there’s “Takers” which stars Paul Walker (“Fast and the Furious”), Matt Dillon, singers T.I. and Chris Brown, and Hayden Christensen (“Star Wars: Attack of the Clones”). Could this film be a hit or just another Bank Heist film? You be the judge.

My spotlight pick of the month is “The Tillman Story”. “The Tillman Story” tells the story of Pat Tillman who gave up his professional football career to join the Army but sadly died during active duty. The trailer suggests that there is more to Tillman’s death and perhaps there is a cover up so it might be interesting to check out.

Winter Movie Season: February 2010

filmreel

The big movie hits in February can be found the weekend of Valentine’s Day. In terms of the month, the themes of the month are action/thriller, romance, and fantasy.

Opening the first weekend of the month is “Dear John” which is the latest Nicholas Sparks adaptation starring Amanda Segfried (“Mamma Mia”) and Channing Tatum (“G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra”). Two words: Tear Jerker. “From Paris with Love” stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers and John Travolta in what looks to be a hit or miss movie.

In my opinion the big hits of the month will be released during Valentine’s Day weekend. Those releases include “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” based on the best-selling series by Rick Riordan, “The Wolfman”, and “Valentine’s Day” which I like to call the Gary Marshall and ABC all-star cast.

Later in the month “Shutter Island” starring Leonardo DiCaprio will be released. The psychological thriller was directed by Academy Award winner Martin Scorsese. For a bit of comedic relief, Kevin Smith’s latest film “Cop Out” will be released at the end of the month.
