Summer is coming to a close and now it’s almost Fall. So what movies can we expect the first month after Summer? My prediction is that this month’s potential box office hits will either come from a family film or a scary/horror movie. Chris Rodriguez’s latest film “Machete” and the latest installment (in 3D) of the “Resident Evil” franchise open this month as the Halloween precursor movies.
Family films “Alpha and Omega” and “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole” seek to rule the box office and both are presented in 3D. “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole” is based upon the novels by Kathryn Lasky.
Looking for more of a rom com or comedy film? Perhaps check out “Easy A” starring Emma Stone and Amanda Bynes. “The Romantics” starring Josh Duhamel and Katie Holmes and “You Again” which stars Kristen Bell and Jamie Lee Curtis.
A possible sleeper hit could be “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps”, which stars Academy Award winner Michael Douglas reprising his Oscar winning role of Gordon Gekko. The film also stars Shia LaBeouf (“Transformers”) and Academy Award nominee Carey Mulligan (“An Education”).
My spotlight picks of the month are “Waiting for Superman” and “The Town”. “Waiting for Superman” is a documentary which focuses on education in America and is directed by Academy Award winning director Davis Guggenheim (“An Inconvenient Truth”). Academy Award winner Ben Affleck (“Good Will Hunting”) directs and stars in “The Town” along with Academy Award nominee Jeremy Renner (“The Hurt Locker”), Rebecca Hall (“The Prestige”) and Mad Men’s Jon Hamm.

As we ring in the New Year, we enter a new decade! So what movies can we expect in the first month of the New Year? Vampires, Romance, and the Supernatural…oh my! If those movie themes do not appeal to you, there are plenty of other films being released this month. Daybreakers, The Book of Eli, and Legion have been promoted the most in my opinion. All three take place in the future and humanity has to be saved in some way.
Family films of the month include Jackie Chan’s The Spy Next Door, Extraordinary Measures, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is the Tooth Fairy. The rom com movies of the month are Leap Year starring Academy Award nominee Amy Adams and When in Rome starring Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel.
My spotlight pick of the month is Creation, which is based on the biography,“Annie’s Box”, written by Charles Darwin’s great great-grandson.. The film stars Paul Bettany as Charles Darwin and Academy Award winner Jennifer Connelly (“A Beautiful Mind”). Now that Fall is in full swing, what movies can we expect in the month of October? I know when I think about the month of October, the first thing that pops into my mind is Halloween and with Halloween I think scary/horror themed movies. There are a few scary/horror movies this month such as “Zombieland”, “The Stepfather”, and the lastest “Saw” installment “Saw VI”. I never saw a “Saw” film, but they must be popular in order for the studio to continue producing them. Those who are eagerly waiting for the next “Twilight” movie will have to wait another month, but if you need a vampire fix, then you may want to check out “Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant”.
I think October will be animation/cgi domination in the box office. The big releases that fall into this category are “Astro Boy”, “Where the Wild Things Are”, and for a limited time the 3D versions of “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “Toy Story/Toy Story 2”. There are few comedies out this coming month with Drew Barrymore’s “Whip It”, “Couples Retreat”, and “The Invention of Lying” starring Ricky Gervais and Jennifer Garner.
My spotlight picks of the month are “New York, I Love You” and “This Is It”. “New York, I Love You” is inspired by “Paris, I Love You” and it has an all-star cast and is directed by an all-star group of directors. The cast includes Bradley Cooper, Orlando Bloom, Natalie Portman, Christina Ricci, and “Dancing with the Stars” alum Cloris Leachman just to name a few. “This Is It” is the Michael Jackson special event concert which will be in theaters (IMAX too) for a limited time. The concept is bittersweet as it is Jackson’s final performance but also a celebration of his career. That’s my October overview, click on the link below to check out the rest of the movies coming out in the next month.
Have you checked out “Astro Boy”? It looks pretty awesome! “Astro Boy” stars Freddie Highmore and Kristen Bell. The animation looks really good and I think it could be a big hit in the box office. “Astro Boy” hits theaters on October 23, 2009. For more info on the movie, visit the “Astro Boy” official website.
Kristen Bell (“Veronica Mars”) and Josh Duhamel (“Transformers”) star in this cute looking romantic comedy about a woman who is unlucky in love but her luck seems to change after a trip to Rome. What can I say…I’m always game to see a good rom-com movie! 🙂
Here is a synopsis via IMDB.com: Beth Harper (Bell) is a young, successful real estate agent … but she’s completely unlucky in love. However, when the New Yorker travels to Rome to see her newlywed sister, she impulsively steals some coins from a reputed fountain of love, and is then aggressively pursued by a band of wannabe lovers.
The film also stars Academy Award winner Anjelica Huston. I’ve really liked Bell’s work on “Veronica Mars” and ever since the show ended in 2007, she has really made an excellent transition from TV to Movies. Up next for Bell is “Astro Boy”, which will be coming out in theaters this October. Josh Duhamel’s last romantic comedy role was “Win a Date with Tad Hamilton” and currently he can be seen in the “Transformers” movie franchise.
In addition to promoting “Astro Boy”, Kristen Bell mentioned that the possibility of a “Veronica Mars” movie may not happen unless Warner Bros. decides to fund it, but yet the possibility of guest spotting on “Gossip Girl” (she is the voice of Gossip Girl) is not entirely out of the question. As for Freddie Highmore, he mentions in the interview a few of his upcoming projects so check out the full interview below.
