Summer Movie Season: June 2011

filmreel

The Summer Movie Season is under way! The films this month are still warming up the box office but there are some that could be box office hits. “X-Men: First Class” takes flight and opens the month which is a prequel to the “X-Men” films starring James McAvoy (“Atonement”) and Michael Fassbender (“Jane Eyre”) as the younger versions of Professor Charles Xavier aka Professor X and Erik Lehnsherr aka Magneto.

Reminiscent of the hype behind “Cloverfield”, Steven Spielberg produces J.J. Abrams’s film “Super 8”, which sounds like a cross between “Lost” and “Jaws”. A partnership that hopes to have movie goers flocking.

The following week Ryan Reynolds is “Green Lantern”, which could be a big hit or a huge miss. Jim Carrey stars in the comedy “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” which looks like a delight for a family film choice.

It wouldn’t be summer without a Pixar film and this time around it’s a sequel, “Cars 2”. I rather enjoyed the original “Cars” film, so I’m looking forward to seeing what they’ve done with the sequel.

Toward the end of the month we have “Bad Teacher”. Cameron Diaz stars as the “Bad Teacher” and other cast members include Justin Timberlake (“The Social Network”) and Jason Segel (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall”). This looks like a film that could have big laughs or may come up short. Also at the end of the month is the third film in the “Transformers” franchise, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon”. Most of the cast members return sans Megan Fox.

My spotlight pick of the month is a film that is out already. If you haven’t seen it yet, go see “X-Men: First Class”. It was fun summer film that was done well and the cast was great and it was certainly the best film in the “X-Men” franchise. Hopefully they can squeeze another prequel film using the “X-Men: First Class” cast.

Summer Movie Season: June 2010

filmreel

The upcoming movie releases for the month of June can be summarized into comedies, remakes, and sequels. Opening weekend of June we have “Get Him to the Greek” directed by Nicholas Stoller (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall”). Russell Brand reprises his role as Aldous Snow and Jonah Hill (“Knocked Up”) has the job of trying to get Aldous Snow to a performance at the Greek Theater. Also opening this weekend is “Killers” starring Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl, “Splice” starring Academy Award winner Adrien Brody (“The Pianist”), and family film “Marmaduke”.

The “A-Team” hits the big screen this month as well as the remake for “The Karate Kid” starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith. DC Comics’s next adaptation, “Jonah Hex”, starring Josh Brolin and Megan Fox (“Transformers”) looks to be a potential box office hit but I think the big box office hit of the month will be “Toy Story 3” in 3D.

Toward the end of the month Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz team up for “Knight & Day” which is an action comedy. Funny men Adam Sandler, David Spade, Kevin James, Chris Rock, and Rob Schneider are in the comedy “Grown Ups”. Lastly the latest installment of the “Twilight” series “Eclipse” will be theaters on June 30, 2010, which is sure to be a big box office hit.

My spotlight pick of the month is “Ondine” starring Colin Farrell. It seems like a more contemporary rendition of “Splash” with more emotion.

Fall Movie Season: September 2009

filmreel

The summer is almost over and with that comes the Fall. Leaves changing and cool breezes, but hopefully the Fall will bring on the heat in the box office. The month of September is a mix of genres. Early in the month we have Sandra Bullock’s latest rom-com “All about Steve” with “Hangover” star Bradley Cooper. Bullock is a stalker who is obsessed with Steve played by Cooper. Just based on the trailer, I have a feeling it is either going to be a hit or a miss. Gerard Butler switches back to the action genre and stars in the “Gamer” where it isn’t just a game, but the players fight to survive. The animated Sci-Fi thriller “9” comes out this month as well. The film was produced by Tim Burton (“Sweeny Todd”) and “Wanted” director Timur Bekmambetov. Toward the middle of the month we have a few horror films with “Jennifer’s Body” written by Academy Award winner Diablo Cody (“Juno”) starring “Transformers” star Megan Fox and Amanda Segfried (“Mamma Mia”). Also “Sorority Row” promises to scare audiences but it kind of looks like “I Know What You Did Last Summer” but with sorority girls. The family pick of the month would be “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” which is going to be in 3D. Hmm…3D meatballs falling from the sky, I don’t know if that it is scary or just plain funny. At the end of the month the remake of “Fame” hits theaters which could be a hit with the growing popularity of dance shows such as “So You Think You Can Dance” and “Dancing with the Stars”. Then there’s Bruce Willis’ latest film “Surrogates”, which is a Sci-Fi film where people don’t live their lives, machines surrogates live life for them.

My spotlight picks of the month go to “The Informant!” starring a big-boned Matt Damon and “Extract”. Damon gained thirty pounds for the role and it looks like it is going to be funny. The film is directed by Academy Award winning director Steven Soderbergh (“Traffic”) who also directed “Ocean’s Trilogy”. “Extract” was written and directed by”Office Space” creator Mike Judge. Could “Extract” be the Fall’s “Hangover”?

So that’s my recap of the September movie releases. Keep reading in order to see the complete list of movies coming out this month.
