The Summer Movie Season is under way! The films this month are still warming up the box office but there are some that could be box office hits. “X-Men: First Class” takes flight and opens the month which is a prequel to the “X-Men” films starring James McAvoy (“Atonement”) and Michael Fassbender (“Jane Eyre”) as the younger versions of Professor Charles Xavier aka Professor X and Erik Lehnsherr aka Magneto.
Reminiscent of the hype behind “Cloverfield”, Steven Spielberg produces J.J. Abrams’s film “Super 8”, which sounds like a cross between “Lost” and “Jaws”. A partnership that hopes to have movie goers flocking.
The following week Ryan Reynolds is “Green Lantern”, which could be a big hit or a huge miss. Jim Carrey stars in the comedy “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” which looks like a delight for a family film choice.
It wouldn’t be summer without a Pixar film and this time around it’s a sequel, “Cars 2”. I rather enjoyed the original “Cars” film, so I’m looking forward to seeing what they’ve done with the sequel.
Toward the end of the month we have “Bad Teacher”. Cameron Diaz stars as the “Bad Teacher” and other cast members include Justin Timberlake (“The Social Network”) and Jason Segel (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall”). This looks like a film that could have big laughs or may come up short. Also at the end of the month is the third film in the “Transformers” franchise, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon”. Most of the cast members return sans Megan Fox.
My spotlight pick of the month is a film that is out already. If you haven’t seen it yet, go see “X-Men: First Class”. It was fun summer film that was done well and the cast was great and it was certainly the best film in the “X-Men” franchise. Hopefully they can squeeze another prequel film using the “X-Men: First Class” cast.
