Winter Movie Season: December 2010

filmreel

Winter is almost upon us and the holiday season approaches. So what films will light up the holiday season? The month kicks off with Natalie Portman starring in Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan”, where dance can take a dark turn.

Mid-month is when some of the bigger movie releases are going to emerge. The third installment of the “Chronicles of Narnia” franchise, “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” takes flight. Academy Award winner, Helen Mirren, stars in an adaptation of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” while Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie star in the thriller “The Tourist”.

Getting a head start over the Christmas Day movie releases we have Disney’s “Tron: Legacy” (in 3D) which is sure to be a big hit, the movie adaptation of the popular cartoon Yogi Bear, and the rom com “How Do You Know” starring Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon (“Walk the Line”) and funny men, Owen Wilson (“Wedding Crashers”) and Paul Rudd (“I Love You, Man”). As for the Christmas releases we have the latest film with the Fockers, “Little Fockers”, the new adaptation of “Gulliver’s Travels” starring Jack Black (“School of Rock”), and the Coen Brothers’s “True Grit”. Also Academy Award winner Gwyneth Paltrow stars in “Country Strong”, which opens as a limited release but will expand in January 2011. The film has also been generating some Oscar buzz.

My spotlight picks of the month are “The Company Men” and “The Fighter”. Mark Wahlberg (“The Italian Job”) and Christian Bale (“Batman Begins”) star in “The Fighter” which is gaining some Oscar buzz as well as “The Company Men”. Although both films have similar themes as other Oscar nominated films being “Rocky” and “Up in the Air”, they both seem to have a special quality that may be worth checking out.

Well that’s my December overview, click on the link below to check out the rest of the movies coming out this month and check back next month for more Winter Movie Season picks.

“Extract” – Not the Vanilla Kind

From the creator of “Office Space” comes a new comedy called “Extract”. “Extract” stars Jason Bateman (“Juno”) who plays Joel, the owner of an extract company, who is trying to deal with his personal and professional problems while another company expresses interest in buying his company. In the same fashion of “Office Space”, Joel is a typical normal guy who you can relate to. He started his company from the ground-up, his marriage has issues, and he has a gaggle of quirky employees. Everything changes when an unfortunate accident occurs on the job-site which can bankrupt the company. Also a new temp named Cindy (Mila Kunis, “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”) stirs things up at the workplace and Joel turns to his friend Dean (Ben Affleck, “He’s Just Not That Into You”) for advice for all of things going on in his life.

Fall Movie Season: September 2009

filmreel

The summer is almost over and with that comes the Fall. Leaves changing and cool breezes, but hopefully the Fall will bring on the heat in the box office. The month of September is a mix of genres. Early in the month we have Sandra Bullock’s latest rom-com “All about Steve” with “Hangover” star Bradley Cooper. Bullock is a stalker who is obsessed with Steve played by Cooper. Just based on the trailer, I have a feeling it is either going to be a hit or a miss. Gerard Butler switches back to the action genre and stars in the “Gamer” where it isn’t just a game, but the players fight to survive. The animated Sci-Fi thriller “9” comes out this month as well. The film was produced by Tim Burton (“Sweeny Todd”) and “Wanted” director Timur Bekmambetov. Toward the middle of the month we have a few horror films with “Jennifer’s Body” written by Academy Award winner Diablo Cody (“Juno”) starring “Transformers” star Megan Fox and Amanda Segfried (“Mamma Mia”). Also “Sorority Row” promises to scare audiences but it kind of looks like “I Know What You Did Last Summer” but with sorority girls. The family pick of the month would be “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” which is going to be in 3D. Hmm…3D meatballs falling from the sky, I don’t know if that it is scary or just plain funny. At the end of the month the remake of “Fame” hits theaters which could be a hit with the growing popularity of dance shows such as “So You Think You Can Dance” and “Dancing with the Stars”. Then there’s Bruce Willis’ latest film “Surrogates”, which is a Sci-Fi film where people don’t live their lives, machines surrogates live life for them.

My spotlight picks of the month go to “The Informant!” starring a big-boned Matt Damon and “Extract”. Damon gained thirty pounds for the role and it looks like it is going to be funny. The film is directed by Academy Award winning director Steven Soderbergh (“Traffic”) who also directed “Ocean’s Trilogy”. “Extract” was written and directed by”Office Space” creator Mike Judge. Could “Extract” be the Fall’s “Hangover”?

So that’s my recap of the September movie releases. Keep reading in order to see the complete list of movies coming out this month.
