Summer Movie Season: July 2011

filmreel

The Summer Movie Season is in full swing! The box office this month is sure to set off fireworks! The films this month are sure to please all as the themes of the month are Fun, Fantasy, Laughs, and Action. The month kicks off with Selena Gomez starring in “Monte Carlo” which is reminiscent of a “Prince and the Pauper” type of theme in terms of mistaken identity of individuals from different social classes.

Following week we have “Horrible Bosses”, which I feel can be a sleeper hit. The film stars Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston, and Colin Farrell as the “Horrible Bosses” while Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, and SNL‘s Jason Sudeikis are the employees that work for them. The film also stars Academy Award winner, Jamie Foxx (“Ray”). From the writers of “Paul Blart: Mall Cop”, Kevin James stars in “Zookeeper”, which looks like a cross between “Dr. Dolittle” and “Night at the Museum”. It could be a big hit or a big flop.

Mid-month is probably one of the most anticipated films this summer, which is the final installment of the “Harry Potter” franchise, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II”. This film definitely promises to be a big box office hit. I know I’m excited to see it!

Chris Evans (“Fantastic Four”) is Captain America in the next Marvel comic hero film, “Captain America: The First Avenger”. This film could go either way, but it definitely won’t stop movie goers from going to see it. Also opening with “Captain America”, is “Friends with Benefits” starring Justin Timberlake (“The Social Network”) and Mila Kunis (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall”). Not sure how this is any different than No Strings Attached, as it is a similar premise but perhaps it has a different angle.

Toward the end of the month we have “Cowboys & Aliens”. The film stars James Bond star Daniel Craig and Indiana Jones‘ Harrison Ford with direction by “Iron Man” director Jon Favreau and Steven Spielberg producing, this film promises to be a big production. Also opening the same weekend is the 80’s cartoon brought to the screen in CG and in 3D, “The Smurfs” The film stars Neil Patrick Harris (“How I Met Your Mother”), Jayma Mays (“Glee”), and Hank Azaria (“Run Fatboy Run”).

My spotlight picks of the month are “The Ledge” and Crazy, Stupid, Love.” “The Ledge” is a thriller that stars Liv Tyler (“Lord of the Rings”) and she is caught in between two men, Charlie Hunnam (“Nicholas Nickelby”) and Patrick Wilson (“Phantom of the Opera”) who have differing religious beliefs as one is an atheist and the other is a devoted Christian. Crazy, Stupid, Love. stars Steve Carrell (“The Office”) in a film that is reminiscent of “Dan in Real Life” but yet seems different in a way. The film also stars Emma Stone (“Easy A”), Academy Award nominee Ryan Gosling (“Half Nelson”), and Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei (“My Cousin Vinny”).

Summer Movie Season: June 2011

filmreel

The Summer Movie Season is under way! The films this month are still warming up the box office but there are some that could be box office hits. “X-Men: First Class” takes flight and opens the month which is a prequel to the “X-Men” films starring James McAvoy (“Atonement”) and Michael Fassbender (“Jane Eyre”) as the younger versions of Professor Charles Xavier aka Professor X and Erik Lehnsherr aka Magneto.

Reminiscent of the hype behind “Cloverfield”, Steven Spielberg produces J.J. Abrams’s film “Super 8”, which sounds like a cross between “Lost” and “Jaws”. A partnership that hopes to have movie goers flocking.

The following week Ryan Reynolds is “Green Lantern”, which could be a big hit or a huge miss. Jim Carrey stars in the comedy “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” which looks like a delight for a family film choice.

It wouldn’t be summer without a Pixar film and this time around it’s a sequel, “Cars 2”. I rather enjoyed the original “Cars” film, so I’m looking forward to seeing what they’ve done with the sequel.

Toward the end of the month we have “Bad Teacher”. Cameron Diaz stars as the “Bad Teacher” and other cast members include Justin Timberlake (“The Social Network”) and Jason Segel (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall”). This looks like a film that could have big laughs or may come up short. Also at the end of the month is the third film in the “Transformers” franchise, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon”. Most of the cast members return sans Megan Fox.

My spotlight pick of the month is a film that is out already. If you haven’t seen it yet, go see “X-Men: First Class”. It was fun summer film that was done well and the cast was great and it was certainly the best film in the “X-Men” franchise. Hopefully they can squeeze another prequel film using the “X-Men: First Class” cast.

Spring Movie Season: March 2011

filmreel

Spring is almost upon us! So what films can we expect for the month of March? The month kicks off with Matt Damon and Emily Blunt starring in “The Adjustment Bureau”. Also opening the first weekend of March are “Rango” starring Johnny Depp, a modern day twist on the classic story of Beauty and the Beast is “Beastly” starring “I am Number Four” star Alex Pettyfer and Vanessa Hudgens.

Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender star in the new adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s “Jane Eyre”, Los Angeles is under attack in “Battle: Los Angeles”, and “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke moves on from Vampires and embraces Wolves in “Red Riding Hood”.

Mid month Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro star in “Limitless” that asks “What if there weren’t boundaries?”. Toward the end of the month, Ashley Greene (“Twilight”) stars in “Skateland”.

My spotlight pick of the month is Win Win starring Academy Award nominee Paul Giamatti. This film was an official selection for the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. A feel good film for Spring.

Winter Movie Season: February 2011

filmreel

February is shaping up to be the month of romantic comedies. The month kicks off with Natalie Portman starring in “The Other Woman”, which is a limited release. Portman seems to be having a big year with a Golden Globe win for Best Actress for her work in “The Black Swan” and she is currently the front runner for the Oscars as well. “Sanctum” also opens the month produced by James Cameron (“Avatar”). Can Sanctum get some of Avatar’s success?

Mid-month we have Channing Tatum (“Step Up”) starring in “The Eagle”, the story of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet acted out by gnomes in “Gnomeo & Juliet”, and the rom com “Just Go with It” starring Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler. Bieber fever also makes it to the big screen with the film “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” in 3D/2D.

Toward the end of the month there’s “Hall Pass” starring Owen Wilson and “I am Number Four”, which has the potential of being a hit or a big miss.

My spotlight pick of the month is “Waiting for Forever”. A little romance and a little drama is quite apropro for the month of commercial marketing.

Summer Movie Season: July 2010

filmreel

Summer is full in swing, so what movies can be expect in the month of July? This July seems to be the month of potential box office hits. M. Night Shyalaman directs “The Last Airbender”, based on the animated series, which kicks off the month and is a potential blockbuster. The 3D animated film “Despicable Me” is sure to draw in big numbers as well.

The team behind Disney’s National Treasure, team up to bring us “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”. The film stars National Treasure’s Nicolas Cage and Jay Baruchel (“She’s Out of My League”). I think this film will either be a big hit or a big miss.

Christopher Nolan (“The Dark Knight”) directs “Inception” which seems like the most intriguing film of the month. The film stars Academy Award nominees Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Departed”) and Ellen Page (“Juno”).

Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie (“Girl Interrupted”) returns to action in the action thriller “Salt”. Is Jolie a Russian spy, or is she being set up? Looks like it is a cross between The Bourne Identity and The Fugitive.

My spotlight pick of the month is “Charlie St. Cloud” starring Zac Efron. Looks like it will be a bit of a tear jerker.

Summer Movie Season: May 2010

filmreel

The summer movie season traditionally kicks off in May and this month is the month of blockbuster sequels and new screen adaptions. The first blockbuster sequel of the month is “Iron Man 2”. Robert Downey, Jr. and company sans Terrence Howard return to reprise their roles. Filling in for Howard’s role is Don Cheadle. Some new baddies include Scarlett Johannsson and Mickey Rourke.

A new screen adaptation of “Robin Hood” starring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett occurs helmed by director Ridley Scott (“Gladiator”). First time screen adaptations include the SNL skit “Macgruber” and the video game adaptation of “Prince of Persia” starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

“Sex and the City 2” and “Shrek Forever After” aka “Shrek the Final Chapter” are the other big sequels of the month. This is suppose to be the final Shrek movie. Although I wouldn’t put it pass Dreamworks to make spin-off movies with the other characters in the film.

My spotlight pick of the month is “Letters to Juliet” starring Amanda Seyfried (“Mamma Mia”) and Vanessa Redgrave (“Atonement”). Seyfried’s character travels to Italy and volunteers to work with a group that answer letters made to the fictional heroine. One particular letter catches her eye and she sets out to find the author of the letter. The film has been getting some good reviews, so if you’re not into the sequels and action films coming out this month – you may want to check out “Letters to Juliet”.

Spring Movie Season: April 2010

filmreel

It’s officially Spring! In another month the summer movie season kicks off but this month there are potential box office hits. Kicking off the month there is “Clash of the Titans” starring Sam Worthington (“Avatar”) and Liam Neeson (“Taken”). Looks like the vampire craze may be moving on, but the Greek Gods are in.

Steve Carrell and Tina Fey star in the comedy “Date Night”, where a simple evening turns into everything but. A possible sleeper hit is “Kick-Ass” where ordinary people become superheroes minus special superpowers. You may recognize Christopher Mintz-Plasse aka McLovin’ from “Superbad” as part of the cast as well as Academy Award winner Nicolas Cage.

Jennifer Lopez returns to the big screen after taking a maternity hiatus in the rom com “The Back-Up Plan”, which ironically has to do with having babies. The film also stars Alex O’Loughlin (“Moonlight”). Before Chris Evans straps on the Captain America costume, he stars in the action film “The Losers”, which is about a team of U.S. Special Ops agents set out on a mission and failure is not an option.

My spotlight pick of the month is “My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend” which stars Alyssa Milano (“Charmed”) and Christopher Gorham (“Ugly Betty”). It sounds a cross between “My Best Friend’s Wedding” and the ABC TV show “The Bachelor” but I am a fan of Christopher Gorham and I’ve always appreciated his work.

Winter Movie Season: January 2010

filmreel

As we ring in the New Year, we enter a new decade! So what movies can we expect in the first month of the New Year? Vampires, Romance, and the Supernatural…oh my! If those movie themes do not appeal to you, there are plenty of other films being released this month. Daybreakers, The Book of Eli, and Legion have been promoted the most in my opinion. All three take place in the future and humanity has to be saved in some way.

Family films of the month include Jackie Chan’s The Spy Next Door, Extraordinary Measures, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is the Tooth Fairy. The rom com movies of the month are Leap Year starring Academy Award nominee Amy Adams and When in Rome starring Kristen Bell and Josh Duhamel.

My spotlight pick of the month is Creation, which is based on the biography,“Annie’s Box”, written by Charles Darwin’s great great-grandson.. The film stars Paul Bettany as Charles Darwin and Academy Award winner Jennifer Connelly (“A Beautiful Mind”). Well that’s my January overview, click on the link below to check out the rest of the movies coming out in the next month.

Winter Movie Season: December 2009

filmreel

In the past, there have been many December blockbuster hits including the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. This December seems to be the month of potential blockbuster hits with Academy Award winning directors behind them. Plenty of promotion has gone into James Cameron’s latest film “Avatar” which is an action/fantasy film starring Sam Worthington (“Terminator Salvation”). Clint Eastwood’s latest film “Invictus” has some Oscar buzz to it and it stars Matt Damon and Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman. Peter Jackson directs the screen adaptation of “The Lovely Bones” which has also garnered some Oscar buzz and it is definitely one of my top picks to see this December.

Rob Marshall (“Chicago”) brings “Nine” from stage to screen with an all-star cast including Academy Award Winners Marion Cotillard, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Academy Award nominee Kate Hudson. Another film that has Oscar buzz surrounding it is “Up in the Air” starring Academy Award Winner George Clooney. Before Robert Downey Jr. reprises his Iron Man role this summer, he first tackles on the role of “Sherlock Holmes”, which looks fun and action packed. Robert De Niro, Drew Barrymore, Sam Rockwell, and Kate Beckinsale star in “Everybody’s Fine” which is probably the only film that takes place during the Holiday season. In terms of family films, there’s “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel”.

My spotlight picks of the month are “The Last Station” and “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”. “The Last Station” is a historical drama based on author Leo Tolstoy’s life and the cast is top notch. The film stars Christopher Plummer (“The Sound of Music”), James McAvoy (“Atonement”), and Academy Award winner Helen Mirren (“The Queen”). “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” is Heath Ledger’s (“The Dark Knight”) final film and looks to be quite a show. Well that’s my December overview, click on the link below to check out the rest of the movies coming out in the next month.
