February the month of St. Valentine, President’s Day, and it’s also Black History Month. This month is a mix of movies. Some sequels, thrillers, and movies returning to theaters in 3D. The weekend before Valentine’s day is when a lot of big movies are being released. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson along with Josh Hutcherson (“The Hunger Games”) stars in the sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth, titled, “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island”. Academy Award winner, Denzel Washington, plays a fugitive in “Safe House”, and it’s up to Ryan Reynolds (“The Green Lantern”) to reel him in. “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” returns to theaters in 3D starring Academy Award winner Natalie Portman (“The Black Swan”), Ewan McGregor (“Moulin Rouge”) as a young Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Liam Neeson (“Taken”) as Qui-Gon Jinn. Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams star in “The Vow”, based on true events. The film’s storyline is reminiscent of Nicholas Sparks’s “The Notebook”. What kind of ending will it have? Sad, happy, or bittersweet?
Nicolas Cage returns as Johnny Blaze in the movie sequel, “Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance”, which could be entertaining or a big flop. Amanda Seyfried stars in the psychological thriller, “Gone”, where a serial killer whom kidnapped her two years prior returns and kidnaps her sister.
My spotlight pick of the month is “This Means War” starring Chris Pine (“Star Trek”), Tom Hardy (“Inception”), and Academy Award winner, Reese Witherspoon. It’s spy vs. spy vying for the attention of one woman. It looks like it could be funny and entertaining. How far will one go in order to win someone’s heart, or will neither win? Time to pick your teams.

The Summer Movie Season is finally here! The films being released this month all aim to rule the box office while some hope to be box office blockbusters. The next Marvel Comic hero to hit the big screen is “Thor” which opens the month starring Chris Hemsworth (“Star Trek”) in the title role along with Academy Award winners Natalie Portman (“Black Swan”) and Sir Anthony Hopkins (“Silence of the Lambs”). Looking for more of a rom com? Check out “Something Borrowed”, which is based on the best selling book by Emily Giffin,
The following week SNL alumi Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph lead an ensemble cast in “Bridesmaids”, which could be a big hilarious hit or a huge miss. Another SNL alum, Will Ferrell, stars in “Everything Must Go”. It’s a dramedy (drama/comedy) that looks like it can be funny but yet poignant sort of like “Stranger Than Fiction“.
Toward the end of the month are some movie sequels. Johnny Depp stars in the latest film in Disney’s Pirates of the Carribbean franchise titled “Pirates of the Carribbean: On Stranger Tides”. This time around Academy Award winner Penelope Cruz (“Vicky Cristina Barcelona”) stars as the female lead. The Hangover gang consisting of Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms), Alan (Zach Galifianakis) and Doug (Justin Bartha) return for Stu’s wedding in “The Hangover Part II”, which is set in Thailand. Also part of the sequel train is DreamWorks’ big hit Kung Fu Panda returns to the big screen in its sequel “Kung Fu Panda 2”.
“Tree of Life” also opens this month and has a lot of buzz surrounding it. Brad Pitt and Academy Award winner Sean Penn (“Milk”) star in this drama/sci-fi picture which is directed by Terrence Malick (“The Think Red Line”)
My spotlight pick of the month is “Last Night” starring Sam Worthington (“Avatar”), Keira Knightley (“Atonement”), Eva Mendes, and Guillaume Canet. Reminiscent of “Closer” it explores relationships both past and present and resisting temptation.

February is shaping up to be the month of romantic comedies. The month kicks off with Natalie Portman starring in “The Other Woman”, which is a limited release. Portman seems to be having a big year with a Golden Globe win for Best Actress for her work in “The Black Swan” and she is currently the front runner for the Oscars as well. “Sanctum” also opens the month produced by James Cameron (“Avatar”). Can Sanctum get some of Avatar’s success?
Mid-month we have Channing Tatum (“Step Up”) starring in “The Eagle”, the story of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet acted out by gnomes in “Gnomeo & Juliet”, and the rom com “Just Go with It” starring Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler. Toward the end of the month there’s “Hall Pass” starring Owen Wilson and “I am Number Four”, which has the potential of being a hit or a big miss.
My spotlight pick of the month is “Waiting for Forever”. A little romance and a little drama is quite apropro for the month of commercial marketing.

Mid-month is when some of the bigger movie releases are going to emerge. The third installment of the “Chronicles of Narnia” franchise, “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” takes flight. Academy Award winner, Helen Mirren, stars in an adaptation of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” while Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie star in the thriller “The Tourist”.
Getting a head start over the Christmas Day movie releases we have Disney’s “Tron: Legacy” (in 3D) which is sure to be a big hit, the movie adaptation of the popular cartoon Yogi Bear, and the rom com “How Do You Know” starring Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon (“Walk the Line”) and funny men, Owen Wilson (“Wedding Crashers”) and Paul Rudd (“I Love You, Man”). As for the Christmas releases we have the latest film with the Fockers, “Little Fockers”, the new adaptation of “Gulliver’s Travels” starring Jack Black (“School of Rock”), and the Coen Brothers’s “True Grit”. Also Academy Award winner Gwyneth Paltrow stars in “Country Strong”, which opens as a limited release but will expand in January 2011. The film has also been generating some Oscar buzz.
My spotlight picks of the month are “The Company Men” and “The Fighter”. Mark Wahlberg (“The Italian Job”) and Christian Bale (“Batman Begins”) star in “The Fighter” which is gaining some Oscar buzz as well as “The Company Men”. Although both films have similar themes as other Oscar nominated films being “Rocky” and “Up in the Air”, they both seem to have a special quality that may be worth checking out.
