The 84th Academy Award Nominations were held on February 26, 2012. Billy Crystal served as host marking this his 9th time. Crystal as always had a funny movie/song opening and his opening monologue was quite funny and he kept the award show moving. As far as the awards, I found it quite coincidental that the jokes made were almost hinting who was going to win. That or it was just a huge writing coincidence. As far as the awards, there were some surprises and some well deserved wins.
and…the “Best Picture” goes to…

The 84th Academy Award Nominations were announced on January 24, 2012. This year there are nine Best Picture nominees. “The Ides of March”, which was co-written and directed by George Clooney was noticeably missing from the Best Picture category but was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. Otherwise most of the nominees are very similar to this year’s Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice nominees. Kudos to the Academy for giving a Best Actress in a Supporting Role nod to Melissa McCarthy for her role in “Bridesmaids”. McCarthy was previously snubbed of a Golden Globe nomination, so it is nice to see that she got an Oscar nomination for a role which many thought would garner one.
The 84th Annual Academy Awards will air on February 26, 2012, with host Billy Crystal making this his 9th time as MC-ing the event.

The 82nd Academy Awards were held on March 7, 2010. Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin were the hosts of the evening and those who were predicted to win, won.
The big winner of the night was “The Hurt Locker” winning 6 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, Kathryn Bigelow.
The night as a whole, in my opinion was not as entertaining as last year but it was a nice ceremony. The highlights of the evening were the opening number featuring Neil Patrick Harris, a performance by the League of Extraordinary Dancers featuring So You Think You Can Dance alumni, and finally the actor/actress speeches about the nominees in the Best Actor and Best Actress categories. Oprah Winfrey talked about nominee Gabourey Sidibe which had her in tears (and me too). A very touching moment for the first time nominee for the breakout performance of the year.
Special kudos to Sandra Bullock nabbing the Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role for the “The Blind Side”. What a way to cap off a great year for her!
