84th Academy Award Round-up and Winners

The 84th Academy Award Nominations were held on February 26, 2012. Billy Crystal served as host marking this his 9th time.  Crystal as always had a funny movie/song opening and his opening monologue was quite funny and he kept the award show moving.  As far as the awards, I found it quite coincidental that the jokes made were almost hinting who was going to win.  That or it was just a huge writing coincidence.  As far as the awards, there were some surprises and some well deserved wins.

84th Academy Award Nominations

The 84th Academy Award Nominations were announced on January 24, 2012. This year there are nine Best Picture nominees. “The Ides of March”, which was co-written and directed by George Clooney was noticeably missing from the Best Picture category but was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. Otherwise most of the nominees are very similar to this year’s Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice nominees. Kudos to the Academy for giving a Best Actress in a Supporting Role nod to Melissa McCarthy for her role in “Bridesmaids”. McCarthy was previously snubbed of a Golden Globe nomination, so it is nice to see that she got an Oscar nomination for a role which many thought would garner one.

The 84th Annual Academy Awards will air on February 26, 2012, with host Billy Crystal making this his 9th time as MC-ing the event.

Here are some nomination highlights:

BEST PICTURE
“The Artist” Thomas Langmann, Producer
“The Descendants” Jim Burke, Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor, Producers
“Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” Scott Rudin, Producer
“The Help” Brunson Green, Chris Columbus and Michael Barnathan, Producers
“Hugo” Graham King and Martin Scorsese, Producers
“Midnight in Paris” Letty Aronson and Stephen Tenenbaum, Producers
“Moneyball” Michael De Luca, Rachael Horovitz and Brad Pitt, Producers
“The Tree of Life” Nominees to be determined

Spring Movie Season: March 2011

filmreel

Spring is almost upon us! So what films can we expect for the month of March? The month kicks off with Matt Damon and Emily Blunt starring in “The Adjustment Bureau”. Also opening the first weekend of March are “Rango” starring Johnny Depp, a modern day twist on the classic story of Beauty and the Beast is “Beastly” starring “I am Number Four” star Alex Pettyfer and Vanessa Hudgens.

Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender star in the new adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s “Jane Eyre”, Los Angeles is under attack in “Battle: Los Angeles”, and “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke moves on from Vampires and embraces Wolves in “Red Riding Hood”.

Mid month Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro star in “Limitless” that asks “What if there weren’t boundaries?”. Toward the end of the month, Ashley Greene (“Twilight”) stars in “Skateland”.

My spotlight pick of the month is Win Win starring Academy Award nominee Paul Giamatti. This film was an official selection for the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. A feel good film for Spring.

Well that’s my March overview, click on the link below to check out the rest of the movies coming out this month and check back next month for more Spring Movie Season picks.
