Happy New Year! What better way to celebrate the new year with the first blog post in 2013! Plenty of great movies to see this month in addition to some December 2012 movies still in the theaters. Such as Golden Globe nominated films “Les Miserables”, “Zero Dark Thirty” and Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained”. Also there is “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”, Judd Apatow’s “This is 40”, and Tom Cruise stars as “Jack Reacher” based on the novels by Lee Child.
The month kicks off with the horror thriller “Texas Chainsaw 3D”. Mid-month Mark Wahlberg and Academy Award winner Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”) star in the crime drama “Broken City”. He’s…back! Arnold Schwarzenegger stars in “The Last Stand”. Schwarzenegger plays a sheriff who has to stop a drug cartel leader with the help of his inexperienced crew members. At the end of the month, Jeremy Renner (“The Avengers”) and Gemma Arterton (“Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time”) play Hansel and Gretel in a dark spin-off of the fairy-tale where the siblings are bounty hunters who track and kill witches. Kind of cross between the TV shows, ABC’s Once Upon a Time and NBC’s Grimm.
My spotlight pick of the month is “Gangster Squad”, which has an all-star cast including Academy Award winner Sean Penn (“Mystic River”), Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, and Emma Stone. It’s a crime drama that’s set in the 1940s and 50s where the LAPD fights to keep gangsters off the streets.

It’s November so it’s time to see a month full of big hits. The month kicks off with Robert Downey, Jr., Zach Galifianakis, and Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx starring in “Due Date”, which is directed and written by Todd Phillips (“The Hangover”). Will Ferrell and Brad Pitt star in the animated film“Megamind” which is in 3D.
Toward the middle of the month, we have the hits that promise to become big blockbusters. Tony Scott’s “Unstoppable” looks like it will do well in theaters combining Academy Award winner, Denzel Washington (“Training Day”) and Star Trek star Chris Pine. The biggest potential box office hit will probably be two words…Harry Potter. Part 1 of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” will be released on November 19, 2010 and looks to be epic. Russell Crowe stars in “The Next Three Days” which is very reminiscent of the TV show “Prison Break”.
Thanksgiving has some promising releases with “Burlesque”, “The Nutcracker in 3D”, and Disney’s “Tangled” which is spin on the classic tale of Rapunzel.
My spotlight picks of the month are “Morning Glory” and “Love and Other Drugs”. “Morning Glory” written by the screen writer of “The Devil Wears Prada” stars Rachel McAdams, Harrison Ford, and Academy Award winner Diane Keaton (“Annie Hall”). Academy Award nominees Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway team up again for “Love and Other Drugs” where Gyllenhaal plays a pharmaceutical sales rep who meets his match when he meets a free spirited woman played by Hathaway.

The summer movie season traditionally kicks off in May and this month is the month of blockbuster sequels and new screen adaptions. The first blockbuster sequel of the month is “Iron Man 2”. Robert Downey, Jr. and company sans Terrence Howard return to reprise their roles. Filling in for Howard’s role is Don Cheadle. Some new baddies include Scarlett Johannsson and Mickey Rourke.
A new screen adaptation of “Robin Hood” starring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett occurs helmed by director Ridley Scott (“Gladiator”). First time screen adaptations include the SNL skit “Macgruber” and the video game adaptation of “Prince of Persia” starring Jake Gyllenhaal.
“Sex and the City 2” and “Shrek Forever After” aka “Shrek the Final Chapter” are the other big sequels of the month. This is suppose to be the final Shrek movie. Although I wouldn’t put it pass Dreamworks to make spin-off movies with the other characters in the film.
My spotlight pick of the month is “Letters to Juliet” starring Amanda Seyfried (“Mamma Mia”) and Vanessa Redgrave (“Atonement”). Seyfried’s character travels to Italy and volunteers to work with a group that answer letters made to the fictional heroine. One particular letter catches her eye and she sets out to find the author of the letter. The film has been getting some good reviews, so if you’re not into the sequels and action films coming out this month – you may want to check out “Letters to Juliet”.
