Winter Movie Season: February 2012

filmreel

February the month of St. Valentine, President’s Day, and it’s also Black History Month. This month is a mix of movies. Some sequels, thrillers, and movies returning to theaters in 3D. The weekend before Valentine’s day is when a lot of big movies are being released. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson along with Josh Hutcherson (“The Hunger Games”) stars in the sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth, titled, “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island”. Academy Award winner, Denzel Washington, plays a fugitive in “Safe House”, and it’s up to Ryan Reynolds (“The Green Lantern”) to reel him in. “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” returns to theaters in 3D starring Academy Award winner Natalie Portman (“The Black Swan”), Ewan McGregor (“Moulin Rouge”) as a young Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Liam Neeson (“Taken”) as Qui-Gon Jinn. Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams star in “The Vow”, based on true events. The film’s storyline is reminiscent of Nicholas Sparks’s “The Notebook”. What kind of ending will it have? Sad, happy, or bittersweet?

Nicolas Cage returns as Johnny Blaze in the movie sequel, “Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance”, which could be entertaining or a big flop. Amanda Seyfried stars in the psychological thriller, “Gone”, where a serial killer whom kidnapped her two years prior returns and kidnaps her sister.

My spotlight pick of the month is “This Means War” starring Chris Pine (“Star Trek”), Tom Hardy (“Inception”), and Academy Award winner, Reese Witherspoon. It’s spy vs. spy vying for the attention of one woman. It looks like it could be funny and entertaining. How far will one go in order to win someone’s heart, or will neither win? Time to pick your teams.

Three New CW Pilots in the works

Source: Comingsoon.net

The CW network has plans to move forward with ordering pilots for three new television series. Based on the DC Comics’ character, Green Arrow, the series “Arrow” is one of the pilots ordered. Greg Berlanti is one of the individuals tied to the project, so this show may have potential. Berlanti has produced such shows like “Dawson’s Creek”, “Everwood”, “Brother & Sisters”, and more recently he co-wrote the DC Comics’ movie adaptation of “Green Lantern” starring Ryan Reynolds and he also directed the film “Life as We Know It” starring Josh Duhamel and Katherine Heigl. Seems like “Arrow” might be try to capitalize on the success of “Smallville” which had its series finale in 2011. Although the CW tried to bring “Aquaman” to the network, but the show never made it to air. Although the pilot episode is still available on iTunes. Justin Hartley was the lead in “Aquaman”, but when the pilot fell through he later starred as Green Arrow aka Oliver Queen and became a regular cast member on “Smallville”. However, according to Entertainment Weekly, Hartley is not being courted nor will be tied to the new series.

Summer Movie Season: August 2011

filmreel

The Summer Movie Season is almost over as we go into the last month of summer. How time flies! This month the films are more low-key but there are a few films that may bring in the crowds. Kicking off the the month, Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds star in “The Change-Up” which has a “Freaky Friday” sort of premise where each guy swap lives literally in each other’s body. Also opening is the prequel to “Planet of the Apes”, “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” starring James Franco. This film can go either way, but watching the trailer reminds me of the “Gozilla” remake starring Matthew Broderick, which was kind of a bust.

Based upon the best selling novel, “The Help”, makes its way to the big screen. Emma Stone, Bryce Dallas Howard, Octavia Spencer, and Academy Award nominee Viola Davis head the cast in what looks to be a poignant yet funny film. From the director of “Zombieland”, “30 Minutes or Less” looks to be a funny film that could be a hit or a miss. Also following in the 3D concert film fad is “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie”. This concert film should be a hit on paper judging on past concert films such as Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus concert, The Jonas Brothers, and Justin Bieber in “Never Say Never”.

Step aside Mr. Schwarzenegger and welcome the new Conan, Jason Momoa, who stars in the remake of “Conan the Barbarian”. The original film came out in 1982, so with all of the advancements in technology the film should have much improved visual effects from the original…the script on the other hand is a different story. I guess we shall see once the reviews come in.

Toward the end of the month, Paul Rudd along with Zooey Deschanel, Elizabeth Banks, Emily Mortimer, and Rashida Jones star in “Our Idiot Brother”, which looks to be a funny film.

My spotlight picks of the month are “One Day” and “The Whistleblower. “One Day” is based upon the best-selling novel by David Nicholls and stars Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. This film was suppose to open last month but it got pushed to this month. Nonetheless, the book was really good, and I’m looking forward to seeing how it translates to screen. Thus far the trailers look on point. If you haven’t seen the trailers for “One Day” yet, click here to watch both trailers. “The Whistleblower stars Academy Award winner Rachel Weisz, in a film that is based on actual events where a police officer tries to keep the peace in post-war Bosnia but uncovers corruption and cover ups. Looks like an intriguing thriller that already has some Oscar buzz surrounding it.

Summer Movie Season: June 2011

filmreel

The Summer Movie Season is under way! The films this month are still warming up the box office but there are some that could be box office hits. “X-Men: First Class” takes flight and opens the month which is a prequel to the “X-Men” films starring James McAvoy (“Atonement”) and Michael Fassbender (“Jane Eyre”) as the younger versions of Professor Charles Xavier aka Professor X and Erik Lehnsherr aka Magneto.

Reminiscent of the hype behind “Cloverfield”, Steven Spielberg produces J.J. Abrams’s film “Super 8”, which sounds like a cross between “Lost” and “Jaws”. A partnership that hopes to have movie goers flocking.

The following week Ryan Reynolds is “Green Lantern”, which could be a big hit or a huge miss. Jim Carrey stars in the comedy “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” which looks like a delight for a family film choice.

It wouldn’t be summer without a Pixar film and this time around it’s a sequel, “Cars 2”. I rather enjoyed the original “Cars” film, so I’m looking forward to seeing what they’ve done with the sequel.

Toward the end of the month we have “Bad Teacher”. Cameron Diaz stars as the “Bad Teacher” and other cast members include Justin Timberlake (“The Social Network”) and Jason Segel (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall”). This looks like a film that could have big laughs or may come up short. Also at the end of the month is the third film in the “Transformers” franchise, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon”. Most of the cast members return sans Megan Fox.

My spotlight pick of the month is a film that is out already. If you haven’t seen it yet, go see “X-Men: First Class”. It was fun summer film that was done well and the cast was great and it was certainly the best film in the “X-Men” franchise. Hopefully they can squeeze another prequel film using the “X-Men: First Class” cast.

Ryan Reynolds is the Green Lantern!

Source: Comingsoon.net

It’s official! Ryan Reynolds has been cast as the Green Lantern! The Green Lantern is a DC Comics hero and the movie is scheduled for a June 17, 2011 release. In a previous post, I mentioned that I can see Reynolds as the Green Lantern, but I thought since he was already starring in the X-Men Origins spinoff Deadpool – that there could’ve been some filming conflicts. I guess there isn’t. Other front-runners for the role were Bradley Cooper and Justin Timberlake, and my personal pick was Henry Cavill who was also screen tested for the role as well. Read the full post here.

Who will be the “Green Lantern”?

Source: The Hollywood Reporter

**UPDATE**
Ryan Reynolds has been cast as the Green Lantern. Read the full post here.

The latest comic book to movie adaptation looks to be the “Green Lantern”. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. have three front-runners in mind. They are Bradley Cooper (“The Hangover”), Ryan Reynolds (“X-Men Origins: Wolverine”), and Justin Timberlake. Other candidates mentioned include Henry Cavill (“The Tudors”) and Jared Leto.

Interesting choices for the Green Lantern. Upon first glance, I would say Ryan Reynolds would look the part but considering he will be starring in the X-Men Origins spin off Deadpool – there could be some filming conflicts. In my opinion, Bradley Cooper has really emerged as a rising star in Hollywood within the past few years. His latest movie, “The Hangover”, has already grossed $210 million domestically and a sequel is already in the works according to this Variety article. I believe Cooper’s breakout role was on the ABC show “Alias” starring Jennifer Garner. “Alias” is one of my all-time favorite shows and I’m glad that the show’s alumni have really done well after the show ended in 2006. As far as Justin Timberlake, I don’t know if I see him as a super hero. I can understand the commercial appeal of choosing him, Timberlake has starred in some dramas (i.e. “Alpha Dog”) and comedies (i.e. “The Love Guru”), but I don’t know if he’s a fit for the role. On the other hand, I can totally picture Henry Cavill as the Green Lantern. Cavill has been linked to many super hero roles including Superman before Brandon Routh was ultimately chosen for “Superman Returns”. Stephenie Meyer, author of the “Twilight” book series, mentioned on her official website that Cavill was part of her dream cast before Robert Pattinson was cast as Edward Cullen for the movie. Cavill is currently starring as Charles Brandon, on the TV series “The Tudors”.

As with all the other super hero franchises, you need someone that can carry a franchise (i.e. sequels, merchandising, etc.) so my vote goes toward Henry Cavill! What do you think?

Summer Movie Season: June 2009

filmreel
The month of May had some big box office hits like “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”, “Star Trek”, and “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” but as May comes to a close, can the month of June live up to the summer movie hype?  This June definitely has some potential box office hits too including Will Ferrell’s “Land of the Lost”, and “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” with Shia LaBeouf.

Looking at the month of June as a whole, I think the box office hits will be “Land of the Lost” and “Transformers”. Another possible hit could be “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3” starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta.  I think some sleeper hits may include “The Hangover” starring Bradley Cooper (“Alias”, “Weddinig Crashers”), and “Year One” starring Jack Black (“Kung Fu Panda”) and Michael Cera (“Juno”).

Some of the romantic comedies coming out in June include “My Life in Ruins” with “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” star, Nia Vardalos, and “The Proposal” starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds. Family flicks include Eddie Murphy’s “Imagine That” and what looks to be a real tear jerker, “My Sister’s Keeper” starring Abigail Breslin (“Little Miss Sunshine”) and Cameron Diaz (“There’s Something About Mary”).

My movie footnote pick would be Sam Mendes’s film “Away We Go” starring John Krasinski (“The Office”) and Maya Rudolph (“SNL”). I really admire Sam Mendes’s work, in particular “American Beauty” for which he won an Oscar for, so I just might have to check this movie out. Sam Mendes is currently attached to the “Lost in Austen” adaptation for the big screen. “Lost in Austen” is a TV mini-series about a modern day girl who somehow winds up in the world of “Pride and Prejudice”. To find out more about the “Lost in Austen” remake, read this Variety.com article.

So those are my highlights on some of the movie releases coming out in June, keep reading on in order to check out the full list of June releases.  Be sure to check back when I sum up the July movie releases.
