Summer Movie Season: May 2011

filmreel

The Summer Movie Season is finally here! The films being released this month all aim to rule the box office while some hope to be box office blockbusters. The next Marvel Comic hero to hit the big screen is “Thor” which opens the month starring Chris Hemsworth (“Star Trek”) in the title role along with Academy Award winners Natalie Portman (“Black Swan”) and Sir Anthony Hopkins (“Silence of the Lambs”). Looking for more of a rom com? Check out “Something Borrowed”, which is based on the best selling book by Emily Giffin,

The following week SNL alumi Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph lead an ensemble cast in “Bridesmaids”, which could be a big hilarious hit or a huge miss. Another SNL alum, Will Ferrell, stars in “Everything Must Go”. It’s a dramedy (drama/comedy) that looks like it can be funny but yet poignant sort of like Stranger Than Fiction.

Toward the end of the month are some movie sequels. Johnny Depp stars in the latest film in Disney’s Pirates of the Carribbean franchise titled “Pirates of the Carribbean: On Stranger Tides”. This time around Academy Award winner Penelope Cruz (“Vicky Cristina Barcelona”) stars as the female lead. The Hangover gang consisting of Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms), Alan (Zach Galifianakis) and Doug (Justin Bartha) return for Stu’s wedding in “The Hangover Part II”, which is set in Thailand. Also part of the sequel train is DreamWorks’ big hit Kung Fu Panda returns to the big screen in its sequel “Kung Fu Panda 2”.

“Tree of Life” also opens this month and has a lot of buzz surrounding it. Brad Pitt and Academy Award winner Sean Penn (“Milk”) star in this drama/sci-fi picture which is directed by Terrence Malick (“The Think Red Line”)

My spotlight pick of the month is “Last Night” starring Sam Worthington (“Avatar”), Keira Knightley (“Atonement”), Eva Mendes, and Guillaume Canet. Reminiscent of “Closer” it explores relationships both past and present and resisting temptation.

Summer Movie Season: May 2010

filmreel

The summer movie season traditionally kicks off in May and this month is the month of blockbuster sequels and new screen adaptions. The first blockbuster sequel of the month is “Iron Man 2”. Robert Downey, Jr. and company sans Terrence Howard return to reprise their roles. Filling in for Howard’s role is Don Cheadle. Some new baddies include Scarlett Johannsson and Mickey Rourke.

A new screen adaptation of “Robin Hood” starring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett occurs helmed by director Ridley Scott (“Gladiator”). First time screen adaptations include the SNL skit “Macgruber” and the video game adaptation of “Prince of Persia” starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

“Sex and the City 2” and “Shrek Forever After” aka “Shrek the Final Chapter” are the other big sequels of the month. This is suppose to be the final Shrek movie. Although I wouldn’t put it pass Dreamworks to make spin-off movies with the other characters in the film.

My spotlight pick of the month is “Letters to Juliet” starring Amanda Seyfried (“Mamma Mia”) and Vanessa Redgrave (“Atonement”). Seyfried’s character travels to Italy and volunteers to work with a group that answer letters made to the fictional heroine. One particular letter catches her eye and she sets out to find the author of the letter. The film has been getting some good reviews, so if you’re not into the sequels and action films coming out this month – you may want to check out “Letters to Juliet”.

more about "SNL – Firelight a Twilight Parody", posted with vodpod

Taylor Swift was the guest host on “Saturday Night Live” on November 7, 2009, and one of the funniest skits was this SNL Digital Short: ‘Firelight’ which is a parody on “Twilight” but with Frankenstein. Other funny skits included a Shakira impression for a Bunny soundtrack, and her monologue which was a musical number where she touches upon the VMA incident with Kanye West, Joe Jonas, and whether or not she is dating Taylor Lautner from “Twilight”. more about "SNL: Beauty and the Beast", posted with vodpod

Here’s a funny skit from “Saturday Night Live” with guest host Gerard Butler which aired on October 17, 2009. Beauty & the Beast has never been like this. Beauty is actually the beast? Belle is a 6, and the Beast seems to be fond of a large posterior. Funny stuff!

"Whip It" -- Image via Fox Search Light

“Whip It” marks the directorial debut of Drew Barrymore and it stars Academy Award nominee Ellen Page (“Juno”), Academy Award Winner Marcia Gay Harden (“Pollock”), Kristen Wiig (“SNL”), and Juliette Lewis (“The Other Sister”).

Synopsis:
A small town beauty pageant contestant (Page) trades in her crown for skates and joins a roller derby team.

“Be your own hero” is the movie’s motto and this movie is full of heart, guts, and laughs. I wouldn’t label “Whip It” as just your ordinary chick-flick, I think it is a film that anyone can relate to. It’s about self discovery, and following your dreams! Plus, the action sequences will have you cheering for more!

Summer Movie Season: June 2009

filmreel
The month of May had some big box office hits like “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”, “Star Trek”, and “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” but as May comes to a close, can the month of June live up to the summer movie hype?  This June definitely has some potential box office hits too including Will Ferrell’s “Land of the Lost”, and “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” with Shia LaBeouf.

Looking at the month of June as a whole, I think the box office hits will be “Land of the Lost” and “Transformers”. Another possible hit could be “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3” starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta.  I think some sleeper hits may include “The Hangover” starring Bradley Cooper (“Alias”, “Weddinig Crashers”), and “Year One” starring Jack Black (“Kung Fu Panda”) and Michael Cera (“Juno”).

Some of the romantic comedies coming out in June include “My Life in Ruins” with “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” star, Nia Vardalos, and “The Proposal” starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds. Family flicks include Eddie Murphy’s “Imagine That” and what looks to be a real tear jerker, “My Sister’s Keeper” starring Abigail Breslin (“Little Miss Sunshine”) and Cameron Diaz (“There’s Something About Mary”).

My movie footnote pick would be Sam Mendes’s film “Away We Go” starring John Krasinski (“The Office”) and Maya Rudolph (“SNL”). I really admire Sam Mendes’s work, in particular “American Beauty” for which he won an Oscar for, so I just might have to check this movie out. Sam Mendes is currently attached to the “Lost in Austen” adaptation for the big screen. “Lost in Austen” is a TV mini-series about a modern day girl who somehow winds up in the world of “Pride and Prejudice”. To find out more about the “Lost in Austen” remake, read this Variety.com article.

So those are my highlights on some of the movie releases coming out in June, keep reading on in order to check out the full list of June releases.  Be sure to check back when I sum up the July movie releases.
