The 64th annual Tony Awards were held on June 13, 2010. Sean Hayes hosted the venue and was quite a performer opening the show with a piano medley and accompanied some of the nominated show’s cast while they performed a song from their respective shows. A lot of first time nominees won their respective categories and the Hollywood stars swept most of the Tony Awards. Scarlett Johannson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Denzel Washington won their categories but the top honors went to “Memphis” for winning Best Musical and “Red” for winning Best Play.
One of the highlights of the awards ceremony were performances by Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison from “Glee”. Matthew Morrison performed All I Need Is The Girl from “Gypsy”. Lea Michele performed Don’t Rain On My Parade from “Funny Girl”. Morrison and Michele are no strangers to the stage as both were nominated for Tony’s before. Lea Michele for “Spring Awakening” and Matthew Morrison for a fantastic performance in “The Light in the Piazza”. According to Entertainment Weekly, Tony Award nominated star Jonathan Groff is joining the cast of “Glee” for a multi-episode arc . Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele (Rachel Berry) were the original leads in the Tony Award winning musical “Spring Awakening” so it is very exciting to hear that they are reuniting on screen. Groff will play the lead male vocalist for Vocal Adrenaline which is the group that rivals the “Glee” crew. Groff’s character will also be a potential love interest for Rachel Berry. As part of a clever marketing strategy, “Glee” premiered after the season finale of “American Idol”. “Glee” is part of the Fox Fall line-up and with American Idol as its lead in, “Glee” brought in approximately 15 million viewers according to Zap2it.com.
Matthew Morrison stars as Will Schuester, an optimistic teacher who volunteers to take over the Glee club in the hope of reliving his glory days with the help of another supportive teacher, Emma Pillsbury, played by Jayma Mays (“Heroes”, “Ugly Betty”) in the effort of trying to make the school’s Glee club great again. Matthew Morrison has starred in the Broadway productions of “Hairspray” (as Link Larkin) and was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance in “The Light in the Piazza” (as Fabrizio Naccarelli). The stars of the Glee club include Rachel Berry (Lea Michele, “Spring Awakening”) and the school’s star quarterback Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith, “Kyle XY”). Together they hope to transform the Glee club into a winning team in order to win Nationals.
