The Summer Movie Season is under way! The films this month are still warming up the box office but there are some that could be box office hits. “X-Men: First Class” takes flight and opens the month which is a prequel to the “X-Men” films starring James McAvoy (“Atonement”) and Michael Fassbender (“Jane Eyre”) as the younger versions of Professor Charles Xavier aka Professor X and Erik Lehnsherr aka Magneto.
Reminiscent of the hype behind “Cloverfield”, Steven Spielberg produces J.J. Abrams’s film “Super 8”, which sounds like a cross between “Lost” and “Jaws”. A partnership that hopes to have movie goers flocking.
The following week Ryan Reynolds is “Green Lantern”, which could be a big hit or a huge miss. Jim Carrey stars in the comedy “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” which looks like a delight for a family film choice.
It wouldn’t be summer without a Pixar film and this time around it’s a sequel, “Cars 2”. I rather enjoyed the original “Cars” film, so I’m looking forward to seeing what they’ve done with the sequel.
Toward the end of the month we have “Bad Teacher”. Cameron Diaz stars as the “Bad Teacher” and other cast members include Justin Timberlake (“The Social Network”) and Jason Segel (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall”). This looks like a film that could have big laughs or may come up short. Also at the end of the month is the third film in the “Transformers” franchise, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon”. Most of the cast members return sans Megan Fox.
My spotlight pick of the month is a film that is out already. If you haven’t seen it yet, go see “X-Men: First Class”. It was fun summer film that was done well and the cast was great and it was certainly the best film in the “X-Men” franchise. Hopefully they can squeeze another prequel film using the “X-Men: First Class” cast.

According to Variety, New Moon star Taylor Lautner has been cast as Max Steel. By signing Lautner, will Mattel have success in the box office like Hasbro has with Transformers? I guess we shall see.

Hasbro are the toy makers behind “Transformers” which has gone on to be a successful movie franchise starring Shia LaBeouf. Hasbro CEO, Brian Goldner, recently talked about some upcoming projects that include bringing board games to the big screen. “Candy Land”, “Monopoly”, and “Battleship” are among the list mentioned. This would not be the first Hasbro board game-to-movie adaptation, in 1985 “Clue: The Movie” was made starring Tim Curry. In fact, according to Variety, a remake of “Clue” is being made with “Pirates of the Caribbean” director Gore Verbinski attached. BBC’s Lizo Mzimba interviewed Shia LaBeouf on the anticipated Transformers sequel and he also shares his upcoming projects. Some of the projects include a “Wall Steet” sequel: “Money Never Sleeps”, and Indiana Jones 5. “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” is directed by Michael Bay and also stars Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel (“Win a Date with Tad Hamilton”), Tyrese Gibson (“2 Fast 2 Furious”), and John Turturro (“You Don’t Mess with the Zohan”). “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” hits theaters on June 24, 2009. For more information on the movie, visit the Transformers Official Website.
The month of May had some big box office hits like “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”, “Star Trek”, and “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” but as May comes to a close, can the month of June live up to the summer movie hype? This June definitely has some potential box office hits too including Will Ferrell’s “Land of the Lost”, and “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” with Shia LaBeouf.
Looking at the month of June as a whole, I think the box office hits will be “Land of the Lost” and “Transformers”. Another possible hit could be “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3” starring Denzel Washington and John Travolta. I think some sleeper hits may include “The Hangover” starring Bradley Cooper (“Alias”, “Weddinig Crashers”), and “Year One” starring Jack Black (“Kung Fu Panda”) and Michael Cera (“Juno”).
Some of the romantic comedies coming out in June include “My Life in Ruins” with “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” star, Nia Vardalos, and “The Proposal” starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds. Family flicks include Eddie Murphy’s “Imagine That” and what looks to be a real tear jerker, “My Sister’s Keeper” starring Abigail Breslin (“Little Miss Sunshine”) and Cameron Diaz (“There’s Something About Mary”).
My movie footnote pick would be Sam Mendes’s film “Away We Go” starring John Krasinski (“The Office”) and Maya Rudolph (“SNL”). I really admire Sam Mendes’s work, in particular “American Beauty” for which he won an Oscar for, so I just might have to check this movie out. Sam Mendes is currently attached to the “Lost in Austen” adaptation for the big screen. “Lost in Austen” is a TV mini-series about a modern day girl who somehow winds up in the world of “Pride and Prejudice”. To find out more about the “Lost in Austen” remake, read this Variety.com article.
So those are my highlights on some of the movie releases coming out in June, keep reading on in order to check out the full list of June releases. Be sure to check back when I sum up the July movie releases.
