Fall Movie Season: September 2012

filmreel

The Summer Movie Season has flown by but there are still many movies to see this month including some big hits lingering in theaters from the summer. Those movies include “The Dark Knight Rises”, “Total Recall”, and “The Bourne Legacy”.

The month kicks off with the thriller “The Cold Light of Day” starring Henry Cavill (“Immortals”), Bruce Willis (“Die Hard”), and Academy Award nominee Sigourney Weaver (“Avatar”). The expanded release of the comedy “For a Good Time, Call…” makes it way into more theaters with appearances by comedic actors/actresses like Seth Rogan (“Knocked Up”), Justin Long (“Accepted”), and Nia Vardalos (“My Big Fat Greek Wedding”) just to name a few.

Mid-month a box office smash returns to theaters but in 3D. Disney/Pixar’s “Finding Nemo” in 3D should be an amazing feast for the eyes. Also the reboot of the Comic Book character Judge Dredd makes it way back to the big screen in “Dredd 3D”. The original film was released in 1995 and Sylvester Stallone starred as the title character. It wasn’t a great film, so hopefully the reboot is better.

At the end of the month, Adam Sandler (“Big Daddy”) and many SNL alumni and comedic actors/actresses voice the animated film “Hotel Transylvania”, a resort where monsters go, it could be a hit or big flop. Other voice talents include Andy Samberg, Kevin James, Molly Shannon, and Selena Gomez just to name a few. Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt star in the movie “Looper” as the same character, Joe. Although things become difficult when future and past Joe meet and one has to eliminate the other. Also Academy Award nominee, Anna Kendrick, stars in “Pitch Perfect” which is college A Capella meets Glee.

My spotlight pick of the month is “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” based on the novel by Stephen Chbosky. A coming-of-age story starring Logan Lerman (“Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief”), Emma Watson from the Harry Potter film franchise, and Ezra Miller.

Summer Movie Season: July 2011

filmreel

The Summer Movie Season is in full swing! The box office this month is sure to set off fireworks! The films this month are sure to please all as the themes of the month are Fun, Fantasy, Laughs, and Action. The month kicks off with Selena Gomez starring in “Monte Carlo” which is reminiscent of a “Prince and the Pauper” type of theme in terms of mistaken identity of individuals from different social classes.

Following week we have “Horrible Bosses”, which I feel can be a sleeper hit. The film stars Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston, and Colin Farrell as the “Horrible Bosses” while Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, and SNL‘s Jason Sudeikis are the employees that work for them. The film also stars Academy Award winner, Jamie Foxx (“Ray”). From the writers of “Paul Blart: Mall Cop”, Kevin James stars in “Zookeeper”, which looks like a cross between “Dr. Dolittle” and “Night at the Museum”. It could be a big hit or a big flop.

Mid-month is probably one of the most anticipated films this summer, which is the final installment of the “Harry Potter” franchise, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II”. This film definitely promises to be a big box office hit. I know I’m excited to see it!

Chris Evans (“Fantastic Four”) is Captain America in the next Marvel comic hero film, “Captain America: The First Avenger”. This film could go either way, but it definitely won’t stop movie goers from going to see it. Also opening with “Captain America”, is “Friends with Benefits” starring Justin Timberlake (“The Social Network”) and Mila Kunis (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall”). Not sure how this is any different than No Strings Attached, as it is a similar premise but perhaps it has a different angle.

Toward the end of the month we have “Cowboys & Aliens”. The film stars James Bond star Daniel Craig and Indiana Jones‘ Harrison Ford with direction by “Iron Man” director Jon Favreau and Steven Spielberg producing, this film promises to be a big production. Also opening the same weekend is the 80’s cartoon brought to the screen in CG and in 3D, “The Smurfs” The film stars Neil Patrick Harris (“How I Met Your Mother”), Jayma Mays (“Glee”), and Hank Azaria (“Run Fatboy Run”).

My spotlight picks of the month are “The Ledge” and Crazy, Stupid, Love.” “The Ledge” is a thriller that stars Liv Tyler (“Lord of the Rings”) and she is caught in between two men, Charlie Hunnam (“Nicholas Nickelby”) and Patrick Wilson (“Phantom of the Opera”) who have differing religious beliefs as one is an atheist and the other is a devoted Christian. Crazy, Stupid, Love. stars Steve Carrell (“The Office”) in a film that is reminiscent of “Dan in Real Life” but yet seems different in a way. The film also stars Emma Stone (“Easy A”), Academy Award nominee Ryan Gosling (“Half Nelson”), and Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei (“My Cousin Vinny”).

A New Year is upon us and awards season shall begin soon. So what movies kick off the new year? The month kicks off with Nicolas Cage starring in “Season of the Witch”.

Mid-month we have Ron Howard’s “The Dilemma” starring Vince Vaughn and Kevin James. After a few delays, Michel Gondry’s (“Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind”) “The Green Hornet” in 3D starring Seth Rogan (“Knocked Up”) will be opening this month.

Toward the end of the month we have Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher starring in “No Strings Attached” for those looking for a rom com.

My spotlight picks of the month is “From Prada to Nada”, which looks to be a feel good movie with some laughs. Alexa Vega of “Spy Kids” fame stars in the film.

Summer Movie Season: June 2010

filmreel

The upcoming movie releases for the month of June can be summarized into comedies, remakes, and sequels. Opening weekend of June we have “Get Him to the Greek” directed by Nicholas Stoller (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall”). Russell Brand reprises his role as Aldous Snow and Jonah Hill (“Knocked Up”) has the job of trying to get Aldous Snow to a performance at the Greek Theater. Also opening this weekend is “Killers” starring Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl, “Splice” starring Academy Award winner Adrien Brody (“The Pianist”), and family film “Marmaduke”.

The “A-Team” hits the big screen this month as well as the remake for “The Karate Kid” starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith. DC Comics’s next adaptation, “Jonah Hex”, starring Josh Brolin and Megan Fox (“Transformers”) looks to be a potential box office hit but I think the big box office hit of the month will be “Toy Story 3” in 3D.

Toward the end of the month Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz team up for “Knight & Day” which is an action comedy. Funny men Adam Sandler, David Spade, Kevin James, Chris Rock, and Rob Schneider are in the comedy “Grown Ups”. Lastly the latest installment of the “Twilight” series “Eclipse” will be theaters on June 30, 2010, which is sure to be a big box office hit.

My spotlight pick of the month is “Ondine” starring Colin Farrell. It seems like a more contemporary rendition of “Splash” with more emotion.
